Can anyone tell me how I can measure the rear drive oil level. I know that it should be 180ml but how do you tell if it needs topping up without emptying it and starting again. There are lots of posts saying it should be below the filler plug level. There’s every possibility that I’m being a plank and missing the bleeding obvious but I can’t work it out.

All suggestions gratefully accepted

It doesn’t need topped up cause sealed unit and level doesn’t drop……….it does however need changed very often cause there’s a lot of metal filings that accumulate. I normally drain into a measure jug and put EXACTLY the same in as I took out - cause you don’t want to overfill.

You’re not missing anything, there’s no level plug on the LC

If there’s no signs of leakage then there’s no need to worry

If you’re in doubt just drop the oil and refill with 180ml, as above I used a measuring jug and a syringe when I did mine, I used to do it annually at the same time as the service

……….especially when the bike is new. Don’t think you change too much. I change it every year when changing engine oil.

Service schedule is every 12k / 2nd service, for the Bevel gear oil.

But, no harm in changing it sooner - as it's not too expensive.

I know this, but at least with my bike there was a lot of metal and black fluid in first year when bike was new. Drain it into clear jug when hot and remove metal from drain magnet (if any) and if happy with colour of fluid - put back in. I personally think 12k is too long, but each to their own 👍

Thanks for all the replies, I think the general consensus is drop it out and refill so that’s what I’ll do.

Cheers

Joe

What year is the bike

What is it's service history like

How is it used ? more road more offroad

If its got normal dealer / indie service history and the schedules have been followed then why do something you dont need to do ?

It’s a 2021 It went in for the recalls recently and they said there was a slight leak from the rear seal. I asked them why they didn’t replace it and they said they didn’t have time, fecking muppets. I need to get it changed but in the meantime I want to make sure that there’s some oil in there - hence the question.

Have your tried a seal wiper, just in case its a bit of crud in the seal?

How many miles? And what seal is allegedly leaking?? Hopefully not the main gearbox to final drive seal??
