i have just taken off that useless thing bm call a rear mudguard but am left with a 2 in ch piece of steel that one of the mounting bolts go into is it possible to take off without to much hassle or do i have to remove caliper if so what are the torque settings for the bolts :)

Don't know about the 12 but did this with my 1150 and used standard BMW blanks as fitted to the GSA. If you are speeking about the same bracket it is meant to stay there and be fitted with a blanking plate. Have a look at the 12GSA to see if this is the case.

Iv'e seen blanking plates for this on Ebay , they are listed regularly in Germany.

Torque values (and a LOT) of other useful stuff can be found here

I removed the crap catcher and I seem to remember the bit of metal you are talking about, anyway this is what mine looks like with all that can be removed taken off, and a few correct size dome head allen bolts fitted as blanks.
