Rear Sprocket/Judder Damper

I need to replace my rear sprocket but i noticed that there is a fair amount of lateral movement i.e. side to side with the sprocket is that normal?:nenau or is it a bearing problem? the wheel itself seems fine with no movement so this could be just situation normal due to the judder damper and the effectively floating sprocket?:confused:

It may be your bearings have collapsed, or it could be the cush drive rubbers have broken up.

Drop the rear wheel out of the bike, and the sprocket carrier should come away from the rear hub. IIRC there are 6 rubber blocks that sit between what could be described as "interlocking fins" between the hub and the sprocket carrier. If these are ok, then check the bearings in the sprocket carrier.

It's a very simple assembly.

thanks nathan not sure am upto changing the bearings myself but at least i now know its not normal

Mine looked like this

Before I replaced them a couple of weeks ago. Its a pretty straight forward job

Also save some money by buying your bearings and seals from other than your BMW dealer. This link details the part numbers

thanks for the help :) i looked at the reprom, saw all the fancy pullers and the need to heat to 100degrees or something and thought i dont think so :eek normally i have a go, mess it up and pay someone even more to come and fix the mess i made!:P i thought maybe this time i just cut straight to the end:augie

just use a big hammer and a piece of bar as a drift like everyone else does:thumb

Oh and a socket or the old bearing to help knock back in:)
 
I am in Bristol, Bring the parts and £40 and I will change them for ya:green gri

(Seeing as I have all the needed tools and experience)
 
i've taken the wheel off for a better look, as far as i can tell the anti-judder elements or whatever they're called look ok to me, the bearings havent broken up like cornermans.

it looks to me that the rocking comes about as the sprocket carrier doesnt sit flush on the hub (about a 1mm gap), the spacing bush on the inside of the carrier sits on the surface of the hub bearing and the carrier rocks or pivots over that. as it rocks i can see the bush moving slightly in the bearings. The bush does turn the bearings but feels notchy.

so i've ordered the bearings and seals, but am i worrying about nothing?

Mine was an extreme example and I only posted it for shock value.... (failed)

A bit of movement is normal in the cush drive but if you have gyroscopic movement when you place hands at 180 degrees on your wheel as if trying to twist it on its axle; then check out the other two bearings in the wheel itself.

oh i was shocked :eek: honest :P

the main wheel is fine, no lateral movement at all, the movement in the sprocket carrier is consistent both on and off the bike, i'll replace the bearings to be on the safe side and if its the same after changing them then at least i have a reference point for future

9 times out of 10 the sprocket carrier bearing fails before the wheel bearings...just change it and be done:thumb

Ditto ... change the two bearings and the seal and be done with it. They are not expensive and changing them before they fail is not the dumbest idea in the world anyway.
 
rear wheel spacers/bushes

got the bearings etc and a mate is coming over to help me fit them on friday, decided to clean up the bits and pieces whilst the wheel was off and noticed that both spacers are deeply scored, the larger one fairly evenly all round, the smaller predominantly on one side, to a depth of about a mm and about 4mm wide before about a 2-3mm clean surface and then another scored groove. its left a sharp edge at the step down so am guessing this cant be good for the seals so it looks like these spacers/bushes need replacing as well. my cameras not good enough to get a picture of this :(

Yep . I had the same issue. BMW dealer supplied one at an astronomical price and rang me a few days ago to tell me the other one , back-ordered from Germany has arrived at last. Given the material that they are made from you would think that they would have a few in stock, but the dealer told me that this item has never been ordered before :confused:

I just contacted a supplier of many things including CNC after-market axle spacers for popular brand dirt bikes. If he gets back to me we may be able to arrange a group buy

my local dealer has them in stock at 6ukp+vat each so not a problem getting them for me :)
 
Steel spacers rock

I had the 3 spacers (2 for the back and 1 for the front) remade out of steel ... so far they have lasted 40,000 miles with only minor scoring.

Note ... the ABS wheel spacers are different from the non-ABS wheels.

I will be talking to a metal guru in Holland on Monday and will see if he wants to spin out some sets.
 
Maybe it is better to make them from Inox.
If he can make multiple sets, I am interested in one or two sets.
