Rear Subframe Replacement will 2007 into 2008 go?

I have a 2008 (facelift) GSA with an exceedingly tatty rear subframe, loads of pitted paint and a cosmetically challenged repair to a rear foot peg hanger.

I've been toying with the idea of getting a good second hand one, having it powder coated, and swapping it over. There is a change in part number between 2007 & 2008, so has anyone carried out the change with success, or know the differences between the two models. Also are the GS and GSA rear subframes the same except for the colour difference.

Many Thanks

I've had similar thoughts but reckon the best option is to have mine sorted and powder coated. At least I KNOW that subframe fits.

To add -
I bought a front (beak) subframe because I thought mine was damaged. The replacement - older model bike - didn't fit but thankfully my original was not damaged.

I thought the front frame would be different as it was part of the "Facelift" in 2008.

The rear subframe may have had some minor changes, so I'm trying to see if anyone has experienced the differences when swapping a frame. I have a feeling there may have been some minor mods around the brake lever area, however I'm not completely sure on that one.

Also Does anyone know if there is a BMW part No or other identifying stamp on the rear subframe, as this might help in tracking down a suitable unit.

Many Thanks

Done a bit more digging and all I've managed to find out so far from the web is

"In approximately February of 2006 all GS models came with the new Adventure rear sub frame.
The centerstand was moved forward for easier lifting and the side stand was changed.
The clevis for mounting the footpeg was widened to accommodate the Adventure footpeg.
On standard GS models a spacer washer was glued to the traditional GS peg to take up the extra space"

This is from the website of www.suburban-machinery.com

If that's the case my safest bet may be a 2007 adventure frame as the 2008 frames seem to be like Hen's teeth.

Has anyone experienced this difference.

I would be tempted to get the 'cosmetically challenged' footpeg repair done properly (poor welding I'm guessing, easily redone with TIG for finish and penetration by a competent engineer), then shotblast and powder coat:

The bike won't be off the road very long, the finish will be perfect, it shouldn't cost the earth and the frame will fit properly.

If you buy a used frame it may need painting anyway, it might be misaligned, and you could unwittingly be sponsoring yet another bike theft.

Hi Pukmeister

I've been trough all those permutations. Problem I have is, as well as the old repair looking crap with a slightly bent frame member, the overall paint finish on the existing frame is now beyond tidying up with the frame in situ, so I'd probably go down the strip and powder coat route. Motoworks and Sherlocks have frames, but neither are sure if the differences pre and post facelift are significant. As their bikes are kosher breakers, I'd be happy purchasing from there and not risk greasing the palms of thieving scum.

Tried that, 2007 & 2008 are different part No's - it's knowing the physical difference that is the problem. The fiche drawings aren't detailed enough, to be honest they look identical.

I have a 2008GSA with a tidy rear subframe, so if you want any photos of subframe areas as a comparison let me know. Why not ask some 2007/2006 owners nicely to do the same so you can work out the differences, then send pics to motor works with an explanation to ensure you get what you need? Just a thought??

FWIW anything you learn about the different subframes could prove useful to somebody in the future as nobody has asked this question until now.

As previously mentioned I believe it is around the rear brake pedal area that there is a slight difference. I discovered this as the 2008-on pedal height cannot be adjusted, and I looked into changing to the earlier type. I concluded that it wasn't easily done. I suppose if you used a different frame and its associated parts then it would be doable.
