Just noticed today that my '09 GSA (7,000 miles) has some play in the rear wheel bearing. In contrast, I wiggle the rear wheel of a brand new GSA today in a showroom, and no play, as to be expected.

Annoying, as on Weds it had its 6K service and wasn't spotted then.

Would this be classed as a warranty job?

The previous two were on mine :thumb2

My O7 GSA had it's bearing replaced ar 2,000mls.You'll have no problem getting it done under warranty.:D

Cool. Always nice to know the answer before you ask the dealer. A bit peed off it wasn't spotted at the service though. Grrr.

The maximum amount of play between the 6 & 12 O'clock axis is 1mm, I have similar play in mine 06 1200GSA. I have also checked with the dealer and checked on some new bikes and there is play on the new bikes also. According to the dealer its ok to have as small amount of play, less then 1mm

Just for clarity - concentrating on say the 6 o'clock position. Is that 1mm of movement overall back and forth, or 1mm of movement off centre in either direction (ie 2mm overall)

Any play here is going to get worse, accelerate bearing, oil seals, disc\pad wear & eventually ruin the bevel gears. Not to mention more vibration & worse handling, Tyre wear & oils leaks!:rob:D
I wouldn't tolerate any wear in the final drive (whilst under warranty).:mcgun

I agree that this seems to be an often quoted (by dealers) tolerance. However, I don't see how it can arise without there being play in the bearings which are (or ought to be) precision items. Certainly if play develops in the wheel it can only mean the bearings are wearing, which is bad as Chris says, they can only get worse.

Hi Mate,

This is the wording of RepRom:

Using both hands, rock the rear wheel over its axle and check the readings on the dial gauge. The measuring point must be on the imagined line through "top hand", "centre of axle" and "bottom hand".

The sum of the positive and negative dial-gauge readings is the rear-wheel bearing play.

Turn the rear wheel so that this measurement is performed at various points around the circumference.

Technical data
Play at rear wheel
Component temperature max 35 °C
max 1 mm

In other words if the 6 O'clock is reading -1mm & 12 O'clock is reading +1mm then it needs to be looked at, You may also check the colour of your FD oil as that is a good indicator of FD problems

If I had any bike with play in the rear wheel I wouldn't be happy!

I couldn't imagine taking my DRZ400 in for an MOT with 1mm of play in the rear wheel bearings & expecting it to excepted as 'within spec'.

:eek

The play is at the wheel rim not at the bearing (its considerably less there). Mine passed last years MOT with the 1mm of play and has done about 15k miles since i noticed it, without problems.

Re Bearing play

Just checked mine tight as a drum no play at all 58 9K Miles GSA. Get it replaced /repaird A.S.A.P Get the most from your warranty period
