I'm thinking of getting a small (10.1" screen) device for when I'm travelling and want to be able to keep in touch. thought one of these would be good to use ? Other thoughts are simply and iPhone and just send texts, get to a t'internet cafe, or just send a post-card ?

Any recommendation, though, on the high-tech solution of a small, portable and robust laptop would be appreciated. Other than mail, photos, map-stuff and surfing, that would be all. What about Dell mini-inspiron or the Eee PC stuff ?

Appreciate any (constructive :augie) comments

Cheers,
Kev

I'm using an Acer One 532H bought from Sainsburys for £219. They have just reduced the price to £199.

Excellent little machine - running WinXP so completely compatible with my desktop. Does everything I need inc. streaming BBC iplayer over wifi. I like the red colour, shows fingerprints though.

Argos have a sale on too - some good deals: look out for one with the faster N450 processor, which also uses less power.

Note: all of the £200 netbooks will have a 3 cell battery. Mine lasts about 3-4 hours depending what I'm running. Dearer machines may have a 6 cell battery for longer use between charges

nice little set top box your link points to:augie

Eee/PC stuff with SSD memory drive. Avoid hard (disc) drive to keep it robust.

Plus 1:) I have 2 of these units. One running windows, and one on linux. Both have SSD memory. If you don't need windows ( eg to run mapsource ) the linux machine is quicker, cheaper, and just as good, if not better.

I'm on a Samsung N150 10in netbook right now....works a treat. I doubled the memory to 2Mb. Runs all I want it to, Microsoft Office apps, Google Earth, Mapsource, Photoshop...:thumb2
I got the 160 hard drive but you can now buy a 250 for the same price ...@ £250 I think....you just need an additional drive to put all your software on with...another £35...

That's weird. At home the link worked every time. Now on hotel wifi I get the Grundig set top box. Something messed up in my ISP's cache I suspect.

Oh, well, I'm sure the OP is capable of finding the Acer Netbook if he is interested

Grundig such a good word, it should mean something.
"Ah - yes he is a bit of a Grundig isn't he?"

eepc901

upped the ram to 2 gig, changed one of the ssd drives to 32gig and slotted in a sdhc 8 gig card, does everything A pc needs to do.
i use mine all the time, dont use the home pc anymore, i get 4-5 hrs out of the batt.
Ive taken it on a tosser camp out and was using it as a giant ipod, spinning the labels on the tables, pumping into a 22 watt stage amp.PUKKA.
If you check the web, the eepc901 is the most modded netook there is,if you want to do something to it, chances are its been done before, theres even a forum for it.
cos its solid state you cant trash the hard drive carrying it on the bike.
hope that helps, atb Paul

I havegot a dell insperon 1012.

Quite a well put together unit, and no fan so it's pretty quiet, even with a standard hard drive. Runs windows 7 starter pretty fast with only 1Gb of ram.

Also battery life is astounding, not run it flat yet and regulary use it for 5+ hours without charging
