Right, I know I'm amongst some of the best brains in the business so be gentle with me..

I want to start up a small business in 2009 and need a website. I've got a tame web designer I need to tap up, but just so I know what i'm blabbing on about, how do I:-

register a domain name,
keep my details relatively hidden from scammers,
ensure I have an email address or three (do I pay regularly?),
ensure continuity of server etc,
upload info/pages regularly.

Over to you experts now!! :bow

Rev, I use Steve Currell(of this parish) who runs Fast2host for Moto Morocco's web hosting......TBH if you look at the link above to Fast2host without knowing anything about what hosting means etc, it could easily fry your brain, so if I were you I'd send a PM to Steve by clicking HERE and I'm sure he'll be able to answer your questions in plain English ;)

PSI've been with them for about 3 years now and have had no problems, no down time, no security issues and have always had fast answers to any queries I've made....there are many hundreds if not thousands of companies who host sites but I liked the fact that Steve is a GSer and a good bloke :thumb2

Many companies will provide you with a package for domain name registration (once you've found one that's free), web site hosting and email accounts - Fast Hosts, Low Cost Names are a couple. They will be responsible for security of the site and ensuring server capacity and uptime. For your email security you'll need the usual firewall and virus protection - ZoneAlarm is an excellent free application for this (search for it on Google).

Of course the website infrastructure is one thing - getting compelling content on it ands drawing visitors to it is another.... Worthwhile checking out the Google Applications for this - Adwords for 'pay per click' advertising and Google Analytics to check out how visitors are using your site.

Good luck!

:agree

Hosting Companies are ten a penny but as Fannykins says its easy to get caught up in it all and make the wrong choices or decisions and when you need help it can be tiresome if not down right impossible to attain the help you need.

Which is why I use Fast2Host and call on the willing assistance of Steve and it is that which I'd pay good money for (and do), the fact they are a comprehensive host, use good kit and are not a faceless entity which is why my sites and domains and those of my clients are hosted there.

Thanks, gents.

Some sageful advice here & something to mull over this weekend. Just trying to avoid getting stuffed, as indeed we all are, but personal recommendations work best I've found.

In terms of costs, what makes web hosting & sites more expensive than the rest? Is it number of pages / content or is this an over simplification?

Anyhoo, thanks again & Happy New Year for later (when I'll be talking absolute blox instead of practicing..)

If you need a proper online eStore then I can hook you up.

It can be done yourself if your well into PCs, but if not your better getting somebody else to do the leg work, it will literally take you a lifetime to teach yourself all you need for a reliable automated system.

If your just talking about a webpage with some business info on it then that the territory of a basement based teenager and is easy enough for you to manage on your own.

Would be PMed you more info but it appears your not a subcribed tosser. :blast
