Need a new laptop, as I've broken the lid/screen on the present unit.:augie
Can you recommend a new unit, it is only used for internet access around the house/garage and reading my camera memory cards.

Thanks.

Bought one of these a few weeks ago Timpo seemed like a good deal to me here

Much cheaper would be the Samsung NC10 updated since I bought mine though, but does exactly what it says on the tin. A tough cooky, runs on Windows XP (so no probs there then), great battery life, but beware there are some out there with only the three cell battery. Mine has the six cell and will last 5 or 6 hours.

Carried to and along the Karakorum Highway, been down the road (in my top box) and continues to work fine. Ideal for downloading camera cards etc and then maybe write to an external USB powered HD. Got 12v car cig socket wired up to my Peli case top box and can charge the NC10, phone etc while in there :thumb

It was recommended to me by fellow Tossers and I haven't been disappointed.

patboy had a thread similar to this last week
http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=212802&highlight=laptop

The one he went for is http://www.google.co.uk/products/ca...ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CBsQ8wIwAg#ps-sellers which seems a decent enough spec for £400

Cheaper alternatives mentioned in the thread. Only buy one of the netbooks mentioned above if portability is a priority. If your internet browsing includes streaming videos or TV from iplayer then get a laptop with a decent sized widescreen.

Here you go Timpo

If you only need it for surfing and nothing serious then go to europc. I bought a IBMThinkpad (proper laptop NOT a netbok) 14 " display XP Pro for a mate the week before xmas for £288 delivered including an additional one years warranty.

Just needs a bit of extra memory and only has a DVD-ROM not writer but both can be fixed cheaply later if you want to .

Go to PC World and dont pay more than £300 :rob:thumb2

Go on ebay and look for the multitude of Dell refurb stock resellers.

They sell the type of stock Dell outlet sells but they get first pick, so the stuff at Dell outlet are the bits they don't want.

Check seller has history (1000+ ) of selling the kit and you will be fine. Warranty where stated are Dell warranties.

Got this tip from a Dell employee who bought from ebay because it is better deal than his staff discount.

+1 on the NC10............an amazing little netbook, I've been really impressed with mine.

If you have another PC and only need it for surfing and basic computing its all you need. It'll run XP, Office, Garmin, etc. without problems. People have also installed W7 if you're keen.

+ 1 for Dell :thumb2

Just got the nipper a Dell Inspiron 3gb memory, 320gb hard disk, 2.4ghz chip, 15.4 screen. In cool matt black.

PC World was £20 cheaper than Dell online (that was a surprise) at £399 for a top quality bit of kit and what I know from previous experience to be superb support.

You can get cheaper for a slightly reduced, but still good, spec.:aidan

Many thanks.....

OK Folks, many thanks for the input.
I have been to work today, and my two electrical type colleagues suggested that I try to repair the unit, ie, I'll buy the parts and they will do the repair.
They put me on to a dealer on ebay who can supply a lcd screen for about £75.
I have also found a bloke who breaks laptops for spares, so I have managed to but a lid from him, so it looks like a reapir for about £90..... which I'm quite happy with because the laptop still has plenty of life in it.

So, thank you very much for your advice, and if the reapir doesn't last, I will revisit this thread and take the notes to make a 'new' purchase.

regards.

Timpo.
