Hi folks

Iam looking for any suggestions / recommendations for a central base where I can stay for a week maybe even 10 days and travel out each day to discover and get to know France a bit better. I have been a couple of times now but mainly as flyer on my way down to Spain or Italy but I really seem to have fallen for the culture and lifestyle after last years jaunt and I now appear to be a wanna be Francophile :bounce1 iam even trying to convince the better half to move out there :clap

So any suggestions you may have would be most welcome ideally central regions down to the southern parts of France with some outstanding roads to ride that's popular with other bikers I am happy riding 250-300 miles a day so that should give me plenty of scope!

Looking forward to what you have to say with my map at the ready :thumby:
All the best Jon

Morvan / Cote d'Or

A bit furter on...

Vosges

A bit further on...

Vercours (but maybe too small an area for two weeks)

Me? I'd two (maybe three) center it and scoot back from the Vercours to get home.

What Wapping says - did the very same thing last year - Beaune in Burgundy & Munster in Vosges were used as bases.

This year, our 2 centre French holiday will be based in Blois on the Loire and La Bourboule in the Volcanes National Park in the Massif Central.

Our place in the Limousin, near Saint Yrieix La Perche http://www.3BsBiking.com
Some great roads round us, including the volcanoes, south into the Dordogne and the Millau Bridge. Plenty to keep you busy round here plus a warm welcome :beerjug: , comfortable rooms, great location and, if you wish, some off road fun too on our enduro style course.

I've got a gite here in Franche-Comte if you're interested. Fine roads in every direction; Jura, Alps, Vosges all within day-out distance.

If you're looking for possible places to buy somewhere, avoid the centre (Claremont F etc.) It is shite in the winter and can be so in the summer.
Look to southern central, SW and SE. For SE. The Vercors, as suggested, is great. If you like camping, Camping Moto is a good base.
If not, look at Die, in the Drome or a bit further east at Gap. A bit further south, Montelimar is nice and central for all sorts of stuff.
For the SW, Cahors.

Merci beacoup !

Wow thanks for the inputs lads got my work cut out pouring over my maps for the next few days the idea of two different base camps in different areas sounds the best way forward thanks again for the inputs hopefully I will having something to show you later in the year :thumby:

I stayed there (Riders Rest) last year just as the purchase was going through. It would be good to hear how the new owners are getting on.

Why not contact the new owners to find out? You could also point them in the direction of UKGSer, assuming the old owner didn't.

That would be good.

Vercors, Auvergne/Cevennes, Luberon (my favourite), Limousin.
Look for the back roads. Nothing darker than yellow.

Other than seeing if there is some absolutely unmissable point of personal interest, ignore the guide books - they'll only send you to where the other people are.

Have fun.
