Me and missus BLL are off to Oz in the New Year for our hols. After a pootle about the QLD coast, we will be stopping in Sydney for two or three nights to do the usual tourist-y stuff.

As there is such a vast choice of places to stay there, has anyone got any recommendations for reasonably central hotels (with parking for the hire car)? I've got the usual stack of Lonely Planet type books, but TBH any recommendations from a tosser would be helpful!

Any in the King's Cross area of the city will give you a new perspective on life.

Park Hyatt

SWiMBO and I had a great stay at The Park Hyatt right on Sydney Harbour.

Fantastic location in an area known as "The Rocks". Great cafes and bars nearby and great location for walking around the harbour area. Opposite The Opera House and right next to the Harbour Bridge.

i was in the hilton only hotel in australia ever to be blown up by some vigilante, good location easy walking distance centre and harbour.

parking underneath

cheaper than hyatt

I stayed in a really nice boutique one near the centre of town. But I can't for the lfe of me remember waht it was called. My sister lives in Sydney so we woull normally stay there - but we just had to get out on our own for a few days.
I will dig around

Mercantile Hotel

On many occasions have stayed in the Mercantile Hotel, 25 George Street, The Rocks, in Sydney.
Dead central for the touristy stuff as its right beside the Rocks area. Beside Sydney harbour bridge and the opera house. Completely re-furbished as of late as well. Within walking distance of most tourist attractions. Very reasonable rates for Sydney centre. Loads of lovely restaurants & pubs close by as well. At weekends there are lovely street markets right outside the hotel along the street.

PS: Do you need a hire car in Sydney ? (as public transport is very efficient and dirt cheap)

can'yt really help youon the hotels as i've never used any - however - book early cos everyone and his 'roo turns up in sydney for xmas / new year.

you'll only need a car if you're venturing outside the city CBD area - non rush hour public transport is quite reasonable

I've stayed in a few.

As mentioned above, the Park Hyatt has probably the best location on the Rocks :

(I've never stayed there so can't comment on the rooms etc)

Also good are the Marriott Sydney Harbour (currently where we stay) or The Intercontinental.

Novotel Darling Harbour is ok too, especially if you opt for a room with jacuzzi and picture window overlooking the Harbour Bridge !
