Went out to start my gs yesterday and the throttle wouldn't rotate until i got two hands at it then when i started the bike it was idling at jst under 2000rpms, after 2 minutes of jst idling the left hand exhaust was glowing red and if i blipped the throttle the revs would very gradually come back down to 2000rpms and no the choke wasn't on.....Has anyone any help for me

Would be useful if you said exactly which bike you have and the year/mileage... then later when the experts are about you will get a proper answer.

Its normal for the headers to glow red (though its normally both sides) - BUT allowing the bike to idle for long isn't good for the engine - glowing after just two minutes is definitely suspicious.

Anyway check back later and you will have an answer - or further questions.

welcome to the site. :thumb2

Ooops its an 01 1150 with 38000 miles.the bike was only started for 3 minutes tops i cud touch the right hand down pipe and each cylinder head without burning my hand. its defo not the throttle cables coz the throttle cable quadrants go back to the stops while the revs still slowly come down

If you could touch the downpipe, sounds like the other cylinder ain't firing at all.

How come the throttle was so stiff to begin with? It sounds like a cable may have been trapped and wrenching it free has knackered the synchronisation.

Have you been doing any work on the bike? A red-hot pipe is generally the result of the throttle cables not being seated properly - the classic place being at the RH throttle body. However, cables have been known to come unseated elsewhere - http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1552689&postcount=22
...and I finally get to post THE PICTURE :bounce1

the right hand cylinder is running fine when i said i could touch the down pipe i meant that skin wasn't left behind:). for the down pipe to get that hot would it not mean that der wud have to be flames coming out the exhaust port????

errrr yes. That's what happens when you ignite an explosive mixture of petrol and oxygen, you get a flame and a big bang :D

Had a similar issue last week....ht lead on offside pot was arcing so not firing on that cylinder.....downpipes were fine, however....the collector box glowed a nice orange! when all the unburnt fuel from the non firing pot went thru...replaced ht lead and plugs, all ok

the throttle wouldn't rotate until i got two hands at it

what have you done to it since you last rode it ?

cleaned it ? moved s'thing ?

I'm after taking off the throttle bodies and the left hand butterfly valve is staying open about a 16th of an inch but i've a suspicion that won't fully fix the problem because i also stuck a new set of plugs in, the bike is still running terribly??? ohh i love bm troublyews:bounce1

Stop changing everything you can think of. All your doing is chucking more confusion into the pot.

Go back to how it all was before you started changing things. Then diagnose/check one thing at a time. Preferably by someone who knows what they're doing, as the hit and miss method can be very expensive and time consuming.

Solved it hip hip???? der was a build up of carbon around the butterfly valve a good clean did the trick thank de baby jesus and everyone that showed an interest:beerjug:
