Removing 1250 GS shocks

just removed my rear shock and sent it to Denso for a service, 5 day turnaround, great service.

Shock removal isnt difficult just a bit tedious removing so much to allow the shock to clear the front area of the mudguard for removal.

If considering it my 2p worth.....

take the wheel and silencer off to make access easier

dont use cheap or worn torx bits as everything is very tight, a 2 foot breaker bar going easy takes the shock bolts out with no heat handy enough.

before refitting, knock the bottom swinging arm bush back in flush to save a lot of beating and swearing.
 
I just fitted ESA Touratech to my 2105 GS last week, took about 6 hours front and rear, first hour was cleaning all the mud off from the previous weekend. My tip would be don't try and take a shortcut, you do need to remove the airbox completely so make sure you have the tool to refit the intake clips, money well spent though.
 
One question. Front sag should be also 30% of total suspension travel, like rear?
 
It would be ideal to set it that way 30-33% is in the range.
What we need to remember GS is not a street bike and comes with almost double the suspension travel of the standard road bike.Couple of millimetres will not make a great impact on the performance and comfort.
It would be nice to get it as close as possible.
The front also has small manual adjustment but is tricky to expose those extra groves. I would usually do that during the service when the spring is off the shock to compensate for the heavy rear spring or some extra weight on the front
Large Light ;), crash bars, tool tube etc.
That can add up quickly.

Now I will also be able to help those guys thinking of upgrading the suspension as I become a Tractive (Touratech) UK partner. and I can also service and custom tune that product to anyone's needs (unlike other retailers ) just in case service and tune of OEM shocks is not enough.

I should be able to pass some of the discounts to the forum members so don't be afraid to ask before you go elsewhere.

Hi denzo sorry to try and contact you from your post but im not on fb i emailed you last week but dont know if you got it,i want to fit manual suspension on a 2010 1200 gs with esa,will i get a warning light on or should i be ok?? not sure to go maxton or nitron whats your thoughts thanks .
 
Hi not sure if I found your email however When you disconnect the ESA the bike will work just fine and should not trigger any dashboard light LC models will!!
if you would like to remove that option from the dash all you need is motoscann app for 5 min
That tool can reprogram ECU and setting will not be present in the menu also button will be dead.
If you near me find me on google TTech Suspension pop in and I'll sort it out.

When it comes to brands I don't have my favourite one. I like the technology not the label.
I'll look what they offer for the money and what would you use it for.
Offroad? Most of the aftermarket shocks will not offer any more then stock PDS suspension Including Ohlins. Only Tractive and Touratech (top models only come with PDS )

Stay away from emulsion shock as they worst then your stock dampers Willbers, Hyperpro, YSS all of those will only offer emulsion shock below 500-600 pound mark not even classify as high performance shock.

A bigger diameter piston and larger shock body will hold more oil and it will perform better when you push it to the limit.

will be nice to have correct spring rate, hydraulic preload adjuster, rebound adjuster and low speed compression. ( piggyback shocks will have those )

Ohlins TTX is a dead end and it will be discontinued shortly already pushed out of superbikes due to lack of performance ( they look nice and the adverts are preaty )
Consider K-tech they have nice products
I think Nitron is a solid shock.
Let us know what did you go for.

I can check the prices for Tractive and Ktech shocks If you know the exact model.

Hi,many thanks for a quick informative reply i dont do offroad unless by accident,will give k tech a ring tommorow didnt even consider them i thought it was all for track use,nitron has been at the top of my list for what i get for my money,maxton seem to be well thought of but they are another £300 many thanks :bow
