Anyone removed the headers and link pipe either to replace or clean & reinstall?

Is it an easy job? Do you know of a video tutorial. I've looked but cannot find anything.

Lots of bits to take off first from the BMW manual

Preparatory work
Removing end silencer

Removing seat

Removing centre trim panel

Removing top front-wheel cover

Removing right side panel

Removing air guide with radiator screen

Disengaging radiator

Then Unplug sensor plug near rear shock and remove exhaust bolts one near cat and 4 on head remove headers

Depends how many miles it's done and the condition of the exhaust manifold studs/nuts.
Took mine off at 58,000 and one stud snapped and one nut was corroded to hell.
It was a right bugger to sort!

Make sure you have a 10mm bi-heaxgaonal socket for the 2 centre studs you can get the other 2 with a ring spanner .I only had to remove the fan cover ,lambda sensor and take rad
bolts out to get the down pipes off

It's done 68kmiles. I did think about the possibility of snapping studs... the idea sends me into a cold sweat! It might be more hassle than it's worth taking them off. I think I'll just go at it the best I can with a Dremel and some Scotch bright pads with plenty of Autosol - that should make it quicker and easier then doing it by hand. I did a good job the last time I did them but it was a long arduous task doing it by hand so by the time I got to the cat I was spent. Maybe I should work in reverse this time and start at the back with the cat?

If you do take them off, give it a Catarectomy... Sounds much better

Meant to ask, how did you end up sorting the snapped rods? Did you drill them out?

Thanks!

Drilled and tapped out by my friendly independent MotoScot
He said it was a tight bitch if s job
Pleased I decided to let him do it as it was due it's regular dose of fresh oil etc

I literally just went through this. Snapped studs.. but not too big of an issue as I am overhauling the whole bike anyway.

Have a look at my post here on adv for some pics of the http://www.advrider.com/forums/showpost.php?p=26752043&postcount=38

Now.. if anyone has any advice on how to KEEP them looking like this that'd be great :-)

Cheers!

That's loo great well done that man ! My 1200rt ones were in a similar condition, it was great to see them come back to excellent condition with a bit of tlc. :beerjug:

thanks. Once I have the engine out I'll leave it with the studs facing up and some penetrating oil.. hopefully that loosens them up bit and I can tap them out without too much effort.

Yeah I am quite happy with the exhaust!
I am close to having the frame freed up now.. so starting to look at options to have it painted. Anyone know of a good powder coating co. that does smalls jobs in the south london area?
I'll post in the more general forum to see if anyone can recommend a good shop.

cheers!
