I'm thinking of making this mod but will be doing a lot of motorway miles. Is the noise level at healthy cruising speeds significantly louder and tiring over distance?

Almost sent myself deaf on a long (5hr) trip up from Cornwall without earplugs... & I only have the Y-piece with a standard can! Took about a month for my hearing to return to normal (or for me to get used to it).
But a good pair of earplugs does the trick. No problems now. Eh?

Remus

I have followed my Pal with his Remus fitted to his Adv. . I found the drone very annoying, Sounds OK if changing speed all the time but sitting at the same speed on the motor way it is annoying. I run the standard pipe.

I have tried several setups:
* Y-piece + standard can
* catalyzer + race can
* Y-piece + race can = what I'm using now.

With just a Y-piece + standard can, the noise level is not significantly higher. On a motorway, I don't think you'll notice the difference even. The wind noise will be win over the exhaust.

Y-piece + race can (open) does get noisy and tiring on long distance rides. I know because I have a Laser Pro d'Or. On longer trips I fit the extension pipe for my Touratech panniers, and then the noise level is lower & OK for a 500 km day.

At least that's what my ears tell me...

Cheers,
Michel

Sorry o be mr safety bloke today, but....

I have to say if you dont wear earplugs you are running the risk of ending up deaf as a soddin post. The exhaust is just an extra.

I dont say say this to be a smartarse - you can still use plugs and save a bit of hearing. Up to you - but crash helmets do not protect you from going deaf.

Fit one of these - forget the noise - and the cost of the Y piece and Can

Cheap, (you can make money - negative cost), quick and achieves what most Bikers want, (they will be able to hear you coming and going)

Cheers

? a WP shock with a hard boiled egg in it? Anyway what the hell happened to your exhaust?

WHATS THE BLOODY QUESTION AGAIN ! I CAN'T HEAR A THING, ITS MY EXHAUST YOU SEE, ITS A BIT LOUD, I SAID ITS A BIT LOUD-

Get ear plugs!

I said, Get ear plugs.

There isn't a helmet on the market today that will not cause permanent hearing damage if used for more than 20 minutes at 60mph or greater.

And I have the tinitus (sp?) to prove it.

I don't go anywhere without ear plugs in now.
There's also the added side effect that the quiet helps you concentrate and your riding improves - if you don't believe me, go give it a whirl!

Kind regards,
Finbarr.

I'll echo (groan) what Finbarr says as I to have Tinnitus caused probably by my early years of riding with no ear plugs. It's got nothing todo with loud exhausts, it's all about wind noise form crash helmets.

If you value your hearing, wear earplugs on every ride. If not, you will get progressively more deaf without realising it until it's too late. I'm 43, I have had full hearing tests, and my hearing level is that of an average 60 year old. I have a constant ringing in my ears which is more noticeable at quiet times. I have trouble differntiating conversations from differnet people when in crowded noisy places like pubs. It's hard to be part of a conversation when you can't hear what everyone's saying because it's just a babble.

Don't bugger up your hearing, wear the plugs, even the cheap throwaway ones are better than nothing.

I gotta agree with everything said on the earplugs if your not wearing them you are doing damage.
I wont go for a ride no matter how short without them.
They're cheep as cheese once you find the ones that suit you best if bought in bulk after trying loads over the years I've found these the best for comfort and quietness.
They've the highest rating at 39db.

it depends on what you call motorway speed.

i've got a remus race can and connecting pipe on an 1100

at 70 its noticable

at 90 its gone with the wind.

at any speed with earplugs its very muted .

i'm sure its getting quieter with age - either that or i'm getting used to it.

not obtrusive either - my bike sitting idling is just as noisy as my neighbours Diahatsu Sportrak Diesel 4wd thingy, so i'm not worried.

What sort of difference did you notice after fitting the Y piece?

Did you do any other mods?

Mines ready to fit to my Twin Spark.

I tried earplugs last summer when I rode my GS1150 down to Italy. I know it makes sense, I've always wanted to try them on a long journey, and with Y-piece and Remus I thought it would be sensible.

The problem I had was that it blanked off the noise soooooo much I just couldn't get used to them. I did persevere over a number of days but in the end I decided to go without and suffer the consequences.

I did have an amusing conversation with a petrol-station cashier in Germany. I still had lid with plugs in and I asked him a question. His lips moved and I heard absolutely nothing.

I found myself getting dizzy/disorientated with the plugs in - and I think they caused additional fatigue. I know noise causes fatigue, so I'm at a loss to explain why I got on so badly with them. They were the disposable sort.

Don't ask me to explain why this might have happened, but I'm sure someone must have an idea

i'm with you pint6x,

i don't mind wearing them for shorter journeys but i generally find them a bit disconcerting - like i'm not getting full sensory information for my riding concentration - if that makes sense!

it might be cos i've only used the cheapo throw-away ones, but i think the reason is because to me it feels unnatural to not be able to hear whats going on, as well as see and feel.

When I first started using earplugs, I felt remote from the world because I couldn't hear properly, particularly in town. Now I've got used to them, I find the high speed wind noise distracting without them. Perception adjusts, at least for me.

Just wanted to mention that in case it helps someone persever with the plugs - it's better to not hear the petrol station attendant because you're still wearing earplugs than have the situation become permanent!

On a bike without plugs your damaging your hearing at only 50mph.
After only a few months I noticed a loss of hearing and slight ringing.
I started to wear plugs the hearing didn't get any better even after 5 years but the ringing has stopped and my hearing has remained the same.
For me they are a must on every ride no matter how short or long
I would urge anyone not using them to persever you will get used to them.
