Hi all,

first off let me introduce myself. I am a f650 dakar '00 rider originally from the land of Greece. Now residing in Bristol.

First post here so expecting noob bashing flames but I have some info alot of you might like, especially all the off-roaders.

I spent most of yesterday fitting Renthal handle bars to my Dakar. You will remember that the problem with these is that for a straight swap you need to give up the bar ends, heated grips and handguards.

Well after searching I have found a chap that will machine bar end adapters for the renthal 7/8''s (or 22mm) bars for £30 quid a pair including material. Depending on demand I might be able to get them cheaper. (I have already dished out for the adapters for myself.)

I am thinking of putting a kit together for who-ever is interested in changing thier OEM BMW heated grips handle bars to sturdier Renthal bars. The total cost will come to about £65-70 depending on whether Renthal is willing to sell to me directly wholesale. Could any who are even remotely interested express this in this thread or even PM me.

So nobody seems to have much interest. I have setup a website exclusively for showing the world how installation is done right by here

Enjoy

Had the same problem with bar ends for the 1200 when I put Renthal's on. The difference is that the 1200 has a bigger diameter clamp (22mm) than the 1150 or 650, so you need to use Fat or Twinwall Renthals. Even their own bar ends dont fit.

I ended up machining the original bar ends down to the correct diameter, and bodging some expanding rubber bits to keep them in.

I'm getting some "proper" ones made up with expanding metal bolts in to do the job properly.

If you get them machined to .5mm of the inner diameter its safest to araldite them in. That way if you ever have to change the bar you can heat it up and pull the adapters out.

Nice and simple.

Are you coming out to join the Bristol & Somerset crowd at the New Inn in Priddy on Tuesday August 30th. It will be a good way for you to meet quite a few GSers.

Depending on the weather. I was planning to take the weekend in the peak district but if rains, no chance.

I guess I might see you all at Priddy then.

I intend changing the bars on mine. Cos they're bent.

Why use the BMW bar ends and not those that fit renthals (£9.99)? Is it because the 650 needs extra heavy ones?
They do add considerable overall width to the bike.

Is there an inbearable amount of vibration without them?
A friend filled his KTM's bars with silicon to prevent vibration (probably not a good idea with heated grip wires though).

Good question,

firstly if you take off the bar ends, you will find that for the cable to go through the bars and not snag, the bars have a cut out.

The renthals dont allow the cables to go through and secondly you have to ditch the OEM handguards because of the length difference between. Even if you want to go for Acerbis guards you will still need to machine something so you can keep the heated grips.

At the moment I have a full set ready to be mounted.

Set includes Renthal Dakar high enduro bend in electric blue (goes nice with your bike :thumb: ) and the machined ends for easy installation of grips and guards. It is basicly a straight swap. I have the basicly the same thing but using a different set of bars. Would sell it to you if you wanted but am going for a well earned holiday and wont be back till end of the month.

I will of course be looking at the forums from time to time and emails every day so anybody interested, have a look at my site, and drop me a line.

hi, thanks for the offer of the bars and adapters.
I have already bought a pair of Dakar high renthals in blue!

Would you sell me a pair of the bar end adapters, and if so how much?

Email address is: [email protected] or contact here

Cheers Tim

Tim,

when you have all installed post some pics on here for us to admire.

yes please do tim ,as im about to order some of the adapors too , due to bent original bars :nono
Must stop this green laneing nonsence :mmmm or at least the falling off bit  :D

cheers mike

I'll send some pics when done, but my experience is that green laneing and falling off are inseperatable. A habit I would dearly like to quit.

So Tim did you get round to doing the handle bar conversion?

Yes all done, with no problems at all. (I cheated with the heated grip wires though, I cut them near the head stock and added a couple of inches to accomodate the risers).
The adapters work a treat.
But still need to fit bar risers with longer brake line to make standing up more comfy.

Nice one... I also thought of getting some small connectors to put inside the bars to make swapping easier. Something like the ones radiocontrol receiving units use to connect the batteries to ( or autocom headset loom ones).

Come on now show the world your bars. If you aint got webspace mail them to me and I'll post them on mine :clap

Tobers, i have fitted Renthals Fatbars to my 1200Gs. I am interested to get some addaptors made up so i can use the hand guards.

Hi there,

I'm interested in buying some of these bar end adaptors from you. I'm trying to fit a pair of BMW handguards and bar end to my Renthal bars. I was going to drill out the bar ends to fit some expanding bolts to secure the bar ends, but I like your idea of securing machined fittings in place with Araldite.

Please email me to discuss how I go about buying a pair:

Thx

Steve
