Forgive the wordplay. :D

I believe the can on my hexhead needs repacking. It got a bit louder over time (bike is uncatted anyway).

I repacked the Remus can on my R1150R ages ago. It was an itchy process, but fairly straightforward. Drill out the rivets and reinstall.

Anyone did it on the original Hex can? Just out of curiosity: anything to look out for, or tips?

I doubt very much if the stock silencer has any kind of wadding in there like a ln an aftermarket can.
I pretty sure it'll be a worthless task to attempt.

And this is why I ask! :)

So just metal mesh inside? Didn’t consider that.

Ok. So nothing to do here. And it means the bike isn’t louder too then :)

Mine got a bit noisy , I thought it might be the flappy valve stuck open or a leak, but having determined the valve was ok and the silencer wasn't leaking I just decided it was fine as it was - a little fruity having "matured" with age.

I do remember back in the 70's and 80's exhausts on Japanese bikes were made of pretty crap metals and they would frequently just rot through from the inside out. Cars were much the same.
It's not inconceivable that a modern exhaust would do the same if the bike were subject to a lot of short journeys and condensation was settling inside. if a small part rotted through then the route for the exhaust gasses would be shorter and the noise reducing compartments could be compromised.
Mine is quite loud too but I decatted it about 18 years ago.
I recently fitted another stock silencer that had been unused by a guy since he removed it 20 years ago. It didn't sound any different to mine that has covered over 150.000 miles.

Funny that you mention this, I just spent a couple of hours this afternoon repacking the Akrapovic end can on my Tmax. The top end of the can had turned to shreds, allowing local overheating and the melting of the Aktapovic sticker. My bloody forearms are itching like mad from the glass mat wadding.

ISTR the OE can on my Hexhead was an heavy all-welded steel construction with a decorative chrome sleeve over it. I think a repack might require cutting open and rewelding. I fitted an aftermarket lightweight titanium scorpion can and link pipe instead, now gifted to a fellow Hexhead owner when I bought my 1250.

It really doesn't do that many short journeys. Actually, these days I use it little, but then it does a few thousands a pop.
I have one of those camera probes, I'll have a look inside the exhaust.

GS has been decatted since shortly after I bought it. I know the cat is what dampens most of the noise, but the bike has always been fairly "decent" sound-wise at low speed.
I had it on track a few times (Brands and Cadwell) and noise tested at pretty civil levels :D

Maybe I am imagining the extra noise :)

When I repacked the Remus it was because a blue "heat" dot appeared on the can.
It burned through the packing and started overheating the can itself.

Yes, it wasn't a fun job :D

I had this same 'issue' with my twin cam. Found a nearly new end can on here quite some while back now. I also fitted a nearly new flappy valve. In the end no change 🤦🏻.
Like me, you do long miles each time and I think, after a while, the drone gets to you! It's only that.

Just maybe a baffle inside has gone? But surely you'd hear it rattling around when you shake it?

I'm still surprised that they sound like they do, as standard - meaning for stock, it's on the loud side of the line. But apparently it's all stock and legal 🤷🏻

Oh. I am rather impressed with just how hot the gases coming out of the tail pipe are. Melted quite a few straps and clips in the past. V annoying!!

I use an Akra can with the single-cam baffle, its quieter than the OEM exhaust. You can go even more quieter with the single-cam standard exhaust (need the headers too, or a few mods to install it on the twin-cam headers)
But I still have the cat so ymmv.
