Hi All,

I bought a Lazer one piece exhaust for my bike (God bless Ebay!), which I'd like to fit on it ASAP. But I have very limited time this weekend.

I know it should be a simple job, but some jobs are notoriuos for should have taken 5 minutes to ending up taking 5 hours. How long did it take you to fit your exhaust?

Thanks.

About 1 hour taking it easy should be fine . Mine had no cat. You need to remove the bash plate and left rear pillion foot peg and refit them after. Before you start, squirt a good load of WD40 on the bolt under the right foot peg where the OEM exhasut joins the header pipe. Give it a real good soaking and leave it overnight if you can because that is the area that seems hardest to get loose. The rest is pretty straight forward.
I suggest getting some exhaust sealing paste to smear inside the places where the header pipe and end can joins. Apply liberally and wipe off the excess once it's all in place an tightend up. This will ensure no leaks that are reknown for causing backfiring.

Sage words there methinks. I'll use some high temp silcon to seal it. I never have a lot of luck with exhaust jointing paste?
Cheers
dave :)

exhaust removal

Le singe,

Mine was a cnut to do as every bolt was hard to undo.
I can change the pipe without removing the bash plate or foot rest you just need to remove the rubber mountings from the central box? 15 mins `ll do it.

If you've got TT style pannier frames you'll have to remove the LH side.

If there's two bolts that'll cause you grief I think it'll be the two small countersunk bolts which attach the rubber mounts to the center stand assembly. Rounding the socket could be a real possibility, so make sure your 5mm allen key's good, in as far as it'll go and square to the bolt.

20 mins tops.

4 bolts to undo

swap the front clamp over

2 bolts to do up.

don't need to remove or loosen the bash plate

1 hr book time = 40 mins bonus, next !

I just had a quick look at the bike. I can only see that it's held on by the front clamp and the rear bracket by the footpeg? Are there some other sneaky bolts hiding away, giggling at my stupity somewhere? It doesn't have a CAT fitted if that makes any differnce?

Why don`t you just get your toolkit out, open your eyes in order to locate the clamps and bolts, have a moment to think about it, then get on with the job ???
This kind of job is nothing more than 'my first toolkit' level...

Fair comment I suppose. But since you ask. I've never worked on one of these bikes. I'm not the greatest mechanic by far. I have been searching the archives and reading the net on various GSs' and keep hearing about wires, sensors and the breaking of etc. Plus most people that are familiar with a certain bike are normally happy to share tips and short cuts etc. If theres a chance of doing some thing the wrong way, I normally find it. So I'm quite happy to ask about even the apparently simplest of tasks rather then break something thats easily overlooked.

Even for a first-timer,the job will take less time than sending these e-mails and reading the answers!
It really is that simple. :)

Taipan: I've done several exaust install so far and I can say from experience the if your's is an eleven, and being on the road for a few years then you may expect removing the rubber mount underneath the engine rather difficult...I had to drill out the (allen) bolt due to severe corrosion...and then you'll have to find a rplacement because the bolt is part of the mount. i managed with a car engine rubber mount from halford.
I'm assuming that you are replacing the entire system (1100 are different to 1150) but if yoy are lucky and the rubber mount come out easily, should take 60 to 90 minutes...

Good luck...

Thanks mate. I aprrecuiate you taking the time to reply. I'll have at it tomorrow armed with the neccesary tools.:)
Best,
Dave

Well i was right I only have 2 bolts!
One at the footpeg and one at the headers? Anyway, you was all wrong it took 10 minutes. :D :o
I sprayed it with Chemaide Release which cured teh rusty bolts instantly and they undid fine. I even manged to find my copper silicone to seal it. This was going too well methinks. Finally I hit a problem. The clamp doesn't fit now. The Lazer must be a thinner gauge. Ho hum. So I guess I can pack it out with some coke can or suchlike. But i'll check teh workshop or local motor factors for a new clamp. I dont really want one of those ugly exhaust U clamps on there though. Hopefully I can find something abit nicer. Bloody annoying though as i want to hear it!

Your exhaust should be easy to remove -

I REMOVED THE BLOODY THING 2 WEEKS AGO TO REPLACE THE CLUTCH

:D And there was me in the pub tonight singing the praises of chemaide release! :P :D

Well I'm still glad I asked the question just in case. As it happens, I spent about 2-3 hours trawling the archives tonight. I now have a much better understanding of the differnces between 1100s and 1150s and CO pots, LAMBDAS and cat code relays etc.

There is an amazing amount of conflicting advice in the archives. I'm certainly not the first one to be confused by the differnces between models and county of origin. I thought i had wires coming out of this exhaust system somewhere and was convinced the exhaust would end up crashing to the floor and ripping the loom to shreds cos I couldn;t find certain bolts or sensors! I was really miffed that i couldn't find any wires or sensors?

Anyway, i have now downloaded the BMW manual and ordered up a Haines one. So you should be safe from any more dumb questions from me.:o :P :D
