Replacing headlight bulb

It's technical for me as I'm a complete novice when it comes to working on the bike. My dipped beam main bulb has gone and I'm going to attempt to replace it!!!

Do I just follow the instructions in the manual? Anything tricky to look out for?

How do I know whether it's a problem with a fuse? The little light still works.

Sorry, don't mean to hijack a thread but I have a similar problem to Andrew, but with the rear brake light on an Adventure. The light works if I touch the brake, but does not work if I let go - which is obviously a big problem at night. I am a mechanical numpty, but even I will have a crack at this. From reading the manual, it seems that there is only 1 bulb, which to me suggests that it is a fuse problem. Am I right, or are there 2 bulbs ?

just change the buld following the manual - if the new bulb works and doesn´t go pop in the next week forget about it. Obviosuly there is little technical input on this procedure. The only thing is be careful if you have big (like me) as there isn´t much space, other its fiddly but straightforward.

EJCE - there is only one bulb at the rear its a very standard twin filament stop/tail light. If the brake light works and the tail light doesn´t it definately isn´t the bulb.

From my experience with rear bulbs either one of the twin filaments can blow independently of the other - therefore the rear light could have blown but the brake light still works - change the bulb, according to the manual and see what happens!

Yes, but BMWs are supposed to do that thing with the warning light on the console and showing the brake light at 1/2 power or something if the filament for the beams fails isn't it?

Before attempting to change the bulb,you should be aware of the potential consequences of inadvertently trapping a wire when replacing the headlamp unit,and the chances of this developing into a fire which could consume the whole bike.
Perhaps it would be better to consider trading-in the bike for another one with a light that works.
Although this may seem quite drastic action,you must remember that if a bulb was to fail on the replacement bike,you may be able to get it replaced under warranty.

yeah I heard something about that and it can affect the abs as well, never happened to me though.

Biker bear - hadn´t thought of that possibility. Again never happend to me - mine have just gone bang. - worth checking visually then if the two filaments are in tact. Or just stick a new bulb in if that cures it fineñ.

There was no warning light on the console, but I have just checked the bulb and sure enough, the tail light filament was shot, while the brake light filament is intact. Visit to Halfords tonight should sort it then.
