retaining springs on front brake pads

probably a bit of a daft question but what's the point of the wire / springs on the reverse of the front pads (brembo brakes) on an early 1150gs?

i manage to catch one when pushing the pad retaining pin back in when fitting new pads and now its mangled and not sitting around the retaining pin properly.

can i just bend it out of the way or do these spring clips on the pads that go round the retaining pins serve some amazing purpose?

Stops the pad rattling on the pin

Wot he staid "but" also stops the pads rattling in the calliper

A MOST annoying Fucking sound if you are unfortunate to collect a bike for a mate with cheap pads fitted

a "temporary" cure to get home without banging your head off the tank is a blob of blue tack squidged on :thumby:

There was 120K on it so there was a tad of wear in the callipers
 
I thought I'd ask my question on here as its kind of along the same lines. Basically I changed my brake pads a little while ago, and it all went well. However I found one of these on the garage floor the other day. Is it important? I haven't really noticed any problems, but it surely cant be there for no reason.
I just don't really want to take the calliper and pads off again if i don't need to.

It's a 5 minute job to get your brakes as they should be:confused:

Which spring thing - the spring washer thing that retains the pin, the spring on the pin or the big spring thing?
I would suggest that all of the parts do something and would tend to want all the bits of my brakes back on the bike. Unless I am forgetting how I last fitted rear pads, all of the parts can be fitted without removing the caliper.

I think it's pretty obvious which part he's referring to:blast:D

It would take longer trying to refit the sprung plate in situ than to remove the caliper:thumb

The big springy plate is to hold the pads in position without rattling. It fits up inside the caliper above the pads so the pads have to come out to fit it.
While you are in there, there more metal plates which clip onto the caliper that the ends of the pads `run` on. It is a good idea to remove these and give them, and the surfaces they sit on, a good clean up. The reason I know this is that the rear brakes were sticking on my bike and I missed these on the initial clean. Once cleaned the problem was sorted.

Thanks for the answers on my original post - i managed to pull the pads and re bend the pad spring back into position so all good now.

Ryans85 hijacked the thread with forgetting to fit the larger plate pad spring when replacing back pads (on a later bike) - i would recommend you refit that one Ryan :) should only be a 5 minute job! good luck!
 
I'm sorry for Hijacking I realised afterwards it probably was a bit naughty.
