A friend has given me a copy of Ride magazine's hand-out supplement on touring / days out, I guess it's from the November or December issue.
Some quite nice suggestions. Nothing too radical but well set out, easy to read and the routes are downloadable from the usual Ride website.
Worth a look if you are that way inclined.
