So this summer I'm off to Scotland for a week. On my way back I have time to avoid the motorways so I'm thinking of riding straight down the middle and hoping to get someinteresting roads.

My current route is:

So the question is for anyone familliar with this part of the world. What roads should I be including or avoiding as I work my way back south? Any must stop cafes? Should I stop to take in any touristy sites or stunning views on my way?

check on the MRA site library for other routes in the area for inspiration. Might help to spot some good roads you've missed and sight seeing places too.

Oddly enough that's exactly what I was planning for the airhead do in the Peaks next week. I'll dig out the route I planned and post it. All you'll have to do is invert it.

I've had a look but there's not a lot. Closest is this:

If your doing that route you’ve posted if you can avoid the motorway and take the a6 over Shap. Stunning road.

I did this route back from Scotland a few years ago and it was stunning.

Brilliant - thank you

Right Buttertubs Pass added to the Yorkshire Dales part so from Alston to Skipton looks reasonably popular on other routes which I'll take as a good sign.

Doesn't look like there's much option to Alston from where I'm starting and it looks interesting so that's hopefull good.
Mike's route meant I found this as well which might make the last part more interesting:

Updated my route with some new points - what do people think?

Brilliant - thanks!
OK. Here you go. As Bing Crosby sang ... "Straight down the Middle" (almost). I'm sure you can make your own way from Galashiels.

Edit - OK. Apparently the file is too large? :nenau Drp me a PM with an email address and I'll try mailing it to you.

Your route from Alston south is pretty much what I do. I've used Reeth as a pitstop on the way further north then joined your route to Alston. 2 pubs on the green in the centre of Reeth do decent B&B
