nah - on the side stand it stays! if you are doing it off the stand, as I used to with my last bikes, then whack on the front brake before chucking that leg and it seems to work...

My mate pushes his GS off the centre stand then cocks his leg over the seat, gets on then just rides off. If I tried that I'm certain I would drop the bike if I didn't put the side stand down before climbing on

I nearly did this at a petrol station. The varios were expanded so I was standing a bit back from the bike (without thinking about it first). I ended up on the bike and supporting it at an angle, loaded and with a full tank with no way to move my left foot to haul it upright. Guy behind me in a car jumped out and gave me a hand.

Practice must be an issue here and I intend to get on the grass at home and work it out.

You MAY be right but when I see some of the young lads and the size of their beer bellies I am surprised that they can lift a leg higher than their kneecaps!

Climb on, sit down.
Start the engine, stick it into first and ride off. Ker-clonk, job done.

Why? 'cos it looks cool.

And don't give me any feckin dribble about what it may or may not do to the flanges or widgets or whatever cos I don't give a toss.
