I've know this little gremlin is part of the key security system. But on a couple of threads recently I've that something is in the key fob...

My 06 made bike is supplied in Malaysia, it dosent come with an alarm and no key fob. Could it be that some bikes don't have the ring antena? and what does it do anyway, I assume its function is related to the key code?

thank in advance for any info on this subjects.

the antenna reads the chip embedded in the key. if it can't do that, the ECU won't allow the bike to start.

Same as Cookie, it's in the plastic bit of the key AFAIK. If you can post a photo of the key, it might give an idea of what type you have. Also, on a similar vein, what sort of spare keys did they give to you? One a lot smaller and looks like it's all plastic?

Hi john, I cant send you a photo till the weekend as I'm traveling and the bikes at home. The second key is just back plastic as you mention.

Original key is typical BMW same as the car ones but no remote etc.

Sounds like you have the imobiliser ones with the infamous ring antenna

There is no seperate remote. I'll have a search to see if I can find the thread with the picture of how to slave in / on a spare ring antenna to get you home.

And here it is: http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1349461&postcount=49

Ring Thingy

So what exactly is the mode of failure with these? Wire break, electronic component fail, vibration/stress........?:nenau

Anyone know?

If the cause is known then there is the posibility of concocting an engineering solution work round! Maybe?:thumb

sorry! not trying to hijack thread, its the same info really:augie

cheers john, not sure i am any the wiser:( is it something i can see? mines an 04 model, i was going to buy a spare, but if it doesn't have one:D more beer tokens for my first trip of the year.

only got the bike in jan, loving it, but some of the faults:eek: got a lot of euro miles to get in this year with friends, so would like to be prepared, don't want a showstopper halfway round, could ruin trip for everyone, and swmbo would have my scrote for a purse;).

I'd be very, very surprised if your bike had the ring antenna then.

If you want to buy something, then the fuel pump controller might be the next biggest stopper IYSWIM, or copy the bypass cable that's been made by Wapping.
