After sticking with "Panakees" for 13k miles, I switched to Avon Azaro/Storm at the weekend. What a difference! No tread block pattering, no understeer, and a feeling that the tyres were anchored to the tarmac. My confidence levels improved massively. Wish I'd fitted them earlier for my trips to Switzerland and Norway. As I don't go off-road (not good for alloys anyway), it's no contest. Highly recommended

I ran the first 8k on Anakees whith no problem what so ever. Needed to change the set so fitted bridgestone BT021's and as you say they are amazing. More planted at speed for sure. Looks like a new rear after 4k so not bad milegae either.

Just keep an eye on the carcasses, I had three replacements under warranty on my FJR 1300 where the carcasses failed, they say thay have now sorted the problem, Despite the name "Storm" they are not so good in the wet after a couple of thousand miles I didnt get on very well with them, I switched to Dunlop Road Smarts, now they are a good tyre, not sure if they make th esizes for a gs but one hell of a tyre.

Personal views as always and i dont pretend to know all, and tyres are a personal thing. just my experience.

Road Tyres; a revelation

Hi Colinw -

Strange bunch aren't we? My brother runs Storms on his R1200S and really rates them in the wet. Could all be down to the extra weight and power of the FJR (I used to own an FJ1200A, so know where you're coming from there!). Were you running Avon's recommended pressures or Yamaha's?

i've done 1000 miles on my new road attacks and i'm mighty impressed with them......compared to the battle wings i had before, drops lovely in the corners and feels more planted...ridden them in downpour yesterday on motorway and was still happy.............bike feels easier to ride....:thumb

Bertie, dont get me wrong, they were ok, well apart from the dodgy ones !! but in the wet I had several sideways motions and twice the front and back at the same time, I got to a point where I could almost predict something was about to happen, then back off, this spoilt them for me. the FJR is booked at 147bhp and about 260kg, I rode to the same limits in the same conditions with the roadsmarts and didnt get the same issues. I dont think many of us ever get the tyres we buy up to temp, but certainly they were noticably worse when it was cold, say below 5 dgrees ambient. Bizarrly though Avon were rumoured to have used their FJR to deveolp the tyre !!!

I have used Avon Azaro's before, on a Ducati ST2 a few years ago, and they were ok, although not as good as the Pirelli's I fitted subsequently. I did make the mistake of using Ducati pressures (32/36) rather than Avon's standard 36/42, and the ST2 was heavy on its front tyre and it wore on the shoulders due to the tyre distorting.

Time will tell, but the harder I rode yesterday, the better they got - but it was hot and dry! I'll report back again when I hit some rain (which probably won't be that long!).

Cheers

4k on a rear tyre seems like pretty bad mileage to me.. a long two week trip would have that worn out then..

I agree - 4k would be the norm on a sportsbike with 150bhp, not a German tractor surely! Have a look at your tracking.....!!!!

I've got around 7K for each rear Annakee, and I know all those with Tourances are getting up to 10k from a rear - my brother's R1200S has done 9k on Avon Storms, and he maintains the rear hasn't even squared off. If I only get 4k from the Storm, I'll try something else.

Bridgestone Battlewing Life

Just reading about tyre life and was going to post a question on my Bridgestone Battlewings .....I have done 4000 miles, ride hard mainly on A roads and they are down to the wear bars on the rear....

I bought the adv new and only have the Bridgestone's as a reference point, but, I've gotta say the handling is brilliant.....so think I will stick with the same (as mainly on road)

Do they need changing if on the centre wear bar?

Had some Road Attacks fitted last week.... First night out into the Yorkshire Dales and I had them scrubbed in.... They do wonders for your confidence on the bends, and no more vibrations from the nobbly bits anymore. I'm never taking the GS offroad so what the point in having a semi offraod tyre. Its a compromise I just dont need to make !!
