Roads to avoid

Lots of good threads/posts about the great roads in Scotland.

But what about the crap roads

Here are two of my hates:-

A9 Inverness to Perth (Or vica versa), Only if you need to be somewhere fast.

A96 Inverness to Aberdeen (Or vica versa), Worst road ever dont do it.

MAGIC road if plenty of traffic - but - phuckin' borrrrrrrrring if clear

A1 from it's junction with the M18 to Gosforth, north of Newcastle, especially the Gateshead bypass section past the Metro Centre which day or night is clogged with outside lane season ticket holders who spot their exit 100yards too late.

Sadly this stretch forms the last leg of most return journeys anywhere in the south of our land for me...



Oh! ...and the A1 from Morpeth to Embra: Hotch-potch of single and dual carriageway, speed-camera and dawdling grockle infested torment... at least before speed cameras you could just nail it with high-beam on and take your chances with the law....

I like the A9, convenient and scenic, can hit Inverness around the 2 hour mark on a good run....

Came back up it last Friday fae Newcastle just to make time but it's annoying to think I could have been on the Coldstream road or A68 (and probably only put 20-30 mins on my journey)

M77, M8 past the airport,and the A82 from the Erskine Bridge to Tarbet.

Why?

M77. Boring.

M8. Full of couples switching lanes doin 40 mph with their heads in Ikea / Breahead rather than on the road.

A82. The bit that passes Dumbarton is depressing, and after the Balloch roundabout I get helpfull drivers pissin me off by moving to the left and inviting me to overtake when it isn't safe. If I'm not in a hurry I gladly shell out the dosh and take the wee ferry from McInroys Point.

the A7, it's crap, you won't like it, don't go there, that's all.....

It's probably the least fun route that I take to the border....

Melville Place Kirkcaldy is pretty boring. 150 yards long with a speed bump and a sweeping bend.
Some say it can be challenging and if you misjudge your speed you can get the turning circle at the end all wrong.
Scenically, its ok, with the trees ahead of you at first and then on your right as you round the curve. A glipse of the sea is possible if you are tall. A glance to the right as you approach the end affords you a glance at the world famous Shed Den... but dont look too long, as the kerb beckons the unwary.
Dangers are the occasional rabbit and the the possibility of cars reversing out of driveways without looking.

Is it do-able without TKC80s?

Only if you run them at 10psi, have GPs co-rdinates punched in, have informed the rescue services of your expected ETA and have emergency cheese and pickle sandwiches.

I'd suggest only going as part of an organised rideout.
