Hey guys / ladys

just a quick one, managed to acquire a set of rocker covers for my gs 1150, but they have been bead blasted ready for painting by the previous owner of them. Just wondering if anyone had anodised a set before? or do people tend to stick to high temp paint or powder coating or something else?

Any thoughts, greatly appreciated as im new to the whole bmw ownership thing.

ps any help with installing a new battery into an r1100rt would also be welcome as at the minute some halfwit previous owner has crossthreaded one of the allen screws holding the centre tank cover in place and this has made the retained nut spin in its plastic mount... AARRRGGHHHH

put it opn E-bay

lol, i already did, its sold but the battery went and died the day before the winning bidder was due to pick it up. I got a new battery yesterday but was thwarted by this bloody cross threaded screw, and it was cold and wet and i generally just wanted to go inside.

I saw some forum somewhere that said to just remove the l/h fairing panel and somehow you can get to it by that but i cant remember the forum and cant find it now haha... oh well.

BLOODY THING

I had a set powder-coated black & they chipped after a while, so I sprayed them with a satin black paint & they chipped after a while. I've resprayed them with HD crinkle finish engine paint & it's looking really good, so far. An unusual effect that stil looks good after a summer's riding...

YOMV

ah right, ill look into that. Im after a durable finish though as i go offroading alot and intend to start taking the gs to rallies etc, dont want it looking cack after just one weekend.

Thats why i was thinking of the hard anodising, at least i presume they are aly? i havent been able to pick the gs up in the van yet to check.

If they are alLy did you use an etch primer prior to painting them ? or just not bother?

Mine are magnesium & I just used a bit of wet 'n' dry to scratch the surface up a bit, let them dry & then sprayed them. The paint is about £20 a can so it's not cheap, but it's less than I paid for powder coating.

aahhh ok, i didnt realise that they were magnesium... hmmm ok ill have a further look into it. Thanks mate

cant anodise cast alloy. only machined i think

if its suitably polished it could be, i would get it ball burnished and then take it to a local platers. But dont know what material they are yet as im yet to receive them. I think that is going to determine what i do. I didnt realise there were different types of cover. Doh:augie
