Planning a trip next summer which will give us 5 nights and 4 full days in Romania. Planning to start in Maramures on night 1 and end up in Arad area on night 5. Definately want to see Maramures and Transfagarasan Road but would really welcome suggested routes or 'must see' places from those who have experience of this country.

Many thanks in advance.

Definately stop and spend some time in Maramures. We rode through it and have regretted ever since not stopping to explore that incredible part of the world. Truly like going back in time. Brasov is worth a stop, bit touristy but still nice for a slap-up meal. Carpathians are georgeous, as are any of the hilly areas in Romania. Make sure the Transfarafgarrraa-whatever-it's-called is actually open before you set off!

did the transfagaras road in may this year. Wonderful great fantastic - till I got about 600m from the top to find that the road was blocked with snow. Wonderful great fantastic - all 75km back to where i started again. Brasov/draculas castle is great but a bit like blackpool with fake fangs etc for sale.
If you get chance head a bit further east and get to Moldova. Chisinau is great and you can get a beer for about 15p.
Watch out for the accomodation prices in Romania - they have sky rocketed in the past few years. Went to one place in Brasov that the guide book said would be about 7euro. Wanted 75 last year. If you keep looking you can find some great guest houses for the 20-30euro mark. One we stayed at the fine lady owning it even washed all my by now seriously smelly clothes. No extra charge.
Watch out on the mountain passes. Never seen so many really old trucks - hence no brakes - hence phenomenal number of accidents.

Thanks
