Hi all

Going to Romania this June and just looking at routes back, avoiding if possible going through central Hungary which we will have covered on the way out. We have 2 days to get from Arad area in Romania to Salzburg and are considering a route through South Hungary then into Croatia and Slovenia before North on motorway to salzburg.

Anyone help with comments on general condition of roads and suggested routes in this area.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

Im also heading from Arad to Salzburg in June and have a similar dilema. Actually I am hoping to clear the Romanian border on the 22nd June and then get to Salzburg before 8pm to catch the autozug train to Dusseldorf. I have ridden the belgrade-zargeb road a few years back and its fine, dual carriageway most of the way although not too scenic.

Once past Zagreb it would get more scenic and again the roads are nothing to worry about.

Not much help im afraid!

Just back and actually went from Arad through southern Hungary and then down through Osijek and down the Croatian coast as far as Zadar before heading back up through Slovenia.

For anyone about to head out to Romania a few pieces of info maybe useful.

As of 12th June the Transfagarsh was still closed with snow.

Also avoid like the plague the road from Sibiu to Arad. The eastern half of the road is one long traffic jam of trucks with road closures and detours for road works - the original road from hell. The western half has a radar trap in every seemngly endless 'village' 50 km limit. We all got pulled and it's very obvious only the foreign vehicles were being targetted. Of the 6-8 vehicles waiting to be processed in the hold area there was only one Romanian and he was driving a car on Austrian plates.

Overall a great trip though.
