I have a burning desire to tour Romania in 2008, not sure why, but the more I research the more I want to go.

Browsing through the rough guide I see that there is a 50kph speed limit for bikes. As it barely gets a mention in any of the threads on here am I to assume its not enforced or are the roads so bad that it is a realistic speed!

I will be 2up with camping gear (with no off road experience) am I asking for trouble? I'm not put off by a little hardship but wifey likes her creature comforts and will not enjoy being battered by potholed roads all day. Anyone toured there 2up?

Thanks

Steve

Hi Steve,

I was also a little concerned about the 50 km/h speed limit for bikes when I visited Romania this year, although it wasn't enforced. The roads range from brilliant to absolutely full of potholes in the East. As you mention, a realistic average for bikes is probably only 50 km/h if you're on minor roads.

The main problem on the main roads is the high number of heavy trucks - they slow down for no-one!

Whaaat! 50kph ie 31 Miles an hour? :eek

I had read that Polish roads were chockabloc with lorries (and that speeds would be restricted because of it) but in reality it was nowhere near as bad as I was expecting, partly because most of the roads I came across were comparatively wide and you could overtake with ease even if there was oncoming traffic.

31 Mph even on a clear road though seems a bit OTT. :nenau

To be Honest I dead 100m/h in Romania weth my 1150GSA and no problemo.

Frankly, speeding in Romania it si not a issue . When I got pulled over a $10 bill was the outcome . But in Hungary is a different story , I still have 2 outstanding speeding tickets:augie , one just across the border from Romania and the second just before the Budapest ring road ,same day

I travelled in Romania a few years ago...not sure if it's changed much.

The speed limit isn't heavily enforced in my experience...although there are a lot of speed traps within the villages, where as I remember the speed limit is 30km p/h

The roads range from dire to excellent...with no clue or logic to their location...some sections are good, followed by a bad section, then excellent, then bad...you get the drift.

I found my average speed was only about 50 mph on the trip....mainly because you really can't assume that even on an excellent section of road won't come across a huge pot-hole in it!...lose your concentration, and take your eyes off the road at your peril!

And if you drive through Bucharest.....stay alert!!!!! :)

The hotels when I went were first rate, readily available everywhere, and cheap(about £15-20p/n, as was the food (£5 for 2 courses and drink)...but I've been told the prices have risen since I went two years ago.

Having said all that....I can't recommend going to Romania enough. It's a beautiful country...though they love to litter!!!...and it's definately one of the best places I've ever been. Go before it becomes just another part of the EU!

Steve
