Not sure about the diploma course. We spoke about it and my instructor advised i should seriously think about it. I'll look into it and see what it's all about, price etc..and then decide if it's for me.....:D

God I can't believe it's been 3 years:eek:

Got my re-assessment letter through the post yesterday, hopefully looking for the assessment late March/April time.....:thumb2

Good luck with your re-test.
Can you tell me what POWER is? You mention it in other posts but I've never heard of this.

I'd love to do a ROSPA test myself but I don't think I'm up to that level yet.

JJ You can do it......

For your RoSPA test a requirement is a pre ride - motorcycle check before you commence the test.
It is known as:
POWDER

* Understand the importance of POWDER checks
* Petrol
* Oil
* Water
* Damage
* Electrics
* Rubber (tyres)

Just get in touch if you need anything further. I did reply re the cameras

RoSPA Diploma - Should you go for it.

The RoSPA Diploma is a good qualification which is recognised when you want to go into further training. However it is a bit expensive in this present climate,

Well done, its a great feeling when Gold is mentioned, I felt that I was walking on air.

Now get out there and pass your knowledge on to others. Its an even better feeling when you see someone that you have been tutoring get better and better.

A few years ago i completed a Defensive/evasive driving course which took in a lot of the IAM principles and I guess I have adapted those for the bike..

Could you possibly have been wearina a green suit at the time, and done the training in yorkshire?.

Never worn a green suit, was in jeans and sweatshirt if I remember correctly. Location was a disused airstrip somewhere up north:D

They do say the ROSPA Gold is the highest civillian motorcycle award...

I loved the feedback I got on the training (Devon and Somerset Advanced Riders). Made a huge difference to how I viewed the road after 30 years riding.

POWDER -
I was told to be careful, a pre -ride check is different from a roadworthiness check.
POWDER is a roadworthiness check not pre-ride.
Pre-ride is being familiear with controls, instuments and making all the adjustments to screen hight,mirrors etc. and checking brakes. Look at the back of Roadcraft.

My tutor also added a Y to make POWDERY - remembering to ask about Yourself- am I fit to ride? A few too many drinks last night? :beer: Is my clothing suitable or are shorts and flipflops not advisable on a GS? :Motomartin Does my medication say Do Not operate heavy machinery... a GS is fairly heavy.

Hopefully you've been out on the bike since first posting the thread three years ago..............just kidding ;)

The OH is a RoSPA examiner, phooey on here, drop him a pm if you like, I'm sure he'd be happy to ride out with you.

There's no magic to RoSPA or IAM, quality training results in quality riding, I'm sure any police trained rider would tell you that. Good luck, be fun to see more RoSPA Gold posts, I've no doubt it's a wonderful feeling :)

.
You say...

The point of RoSPA is that it trains riders up to test level. you pay out a small amount of money - £120 in Devon, and the volunteer tutors give you about 6 or 7 observed rides ( about 2 -3 hours including coffee breaks) with great feedback on what to work on. You read roadcraft, and go out on a couple of group rides, by which time the rough edges have been smoothed off your riding and you are ready and confident!
go for it , you won't regret it, nor will your insurance premium!

I sat my 3yr re-test today and got awarded a Silver. Bit disappointed I didn't make the Gold grade again but everything the observer said was fair:thumb. I didn't feel the ride went as well as it could have gone, lines and positioning were good but too definate and didn't flow well enough. The observer was an ex police biker who now runs (i think?) Rapid Training. :thumb2

Never mind, it has given me something to aim for next time round. I'm thinking of going down the IAM route as well to brush up on the skills I already have. :D

Did you just sit the retest without contacting your local RoSPA group as I am sure one of the tutors would have taken you out, I know I would.

I would suggest you go back to the RoSPA group and get them to sharpen up your riding and I say that as both a IAM Snr Obs and RoSPA Tutor

Refresh Gold!

Deffo agree with a couple of sessions with a Tutor before a re-test.
Thats why i prefer Roaspa, because of the 3 year re-test, sorts out those bad habits you seem to pick up from the untrained road users you see every day!!

Quite agree about re-assessment after a period, & 3 years seems reasonable, but any IAM member can get a re-test as well as RoSPA members. They only have to ask.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and perhaps I should have gone out for a few observed rides prior to re-test. However, if you read the start of this thread you will see that 3 years ago when I was interested in advanced riding I had one observed ride with a RoSPA examiner. At the end of the ride he advised me to put in for my test. I did and was awarded gold. I didn't think my riding had changed that much over the last 3 years.
