ROSPA Riding

When I did my IAM, I was told it was ok to speed when overtaking, as long as I was at the posted limit when pulling in. On my RoSPA, it was not allowed to speed at any time.

Yet on my RoSPA test the week before last, it was acceptable to speed on an overtake as long as I didn't kick the arse out of it. On my IAM test, it was made quite clear no speeding at all.

That’s the issue.
Why? It's their test so their rules. When I did both car and bike courses with the IAM I was expected to make safe, smooth "progress" but keeping within the speed limits. If it's safe to ride at the posted limit that's what they expect to see on test. The Car lead assessor explianed it quite well when I did an assessment drive before I sighed up. Do what they ask as it's their standard and pass the test, after that you can use what you've leared and apply it to your own driving in a way you see fit. Sounded fair enough to me.

When I did my car IAM test, a large artic started to overtake me in the 30 mph zone. It never going to make it that was clear. I said to the tester “you happy I just get out of the road”, I had a GTI Golf at the time, we accelerated out of the road.

The tester never even mentioned it at the summary at the end. ( I passed)

🤷🏼‍♂️

On any advanced test at the pre ride briefing ask the examiner "will you be looking at your speedo during an overtake" his answer will tell you all you need to know for that test there and then.

Agreed.
Not that I am against making progress...I love making progress ...but I feel I am not more advanced nor no less advanced when I bimble along.
The simple answer is - If you want to do IAM or RoSPA, Rapid or any other training, then do it and do what they want for you to pass or get the grade. If you don't want to do it, don't - easy really :)

I seem to remember when I did both my police car and motorcycle courses we were expected to remain within the speed limits. I was told that the these standard courses were the equivalent to the IAM pass. It was only when doing the advanced car and bike courses and the vehicle handling skills course that we had to exceed speed limits (not in marked limits, but the ones with the 'Ding' sign.)
I'd love to be able to do those advanced courses again, I felt guilty being paid :D

……. it, but not bimbling along as if you are in the motorcycle version of 'Driving Miss Daisy' ……

I think Bimbling is quite alright - if you have a road to yourself. Being below the speed limit then is not a crime. So why? in the eyes of the examiner.

Bimbling with a queue of frustrated vehicles behind you below the limit is one of the most annoying things we might meet. On A roads and M/ways. A hanging offence :)

A per one example above, I’ll decide when it’s time to get a move on. And how.

Hence my parting with IAM.

All different.

Which is why I ask the examiner the question before the test starts...

It might not be rocket science, but it is confusing and the exam is not cheap (£85!) And if you don't think £85 is a lot of money, you live in a different financial sphere to us. I haven't earned £85 this week or last.

The website is a nightmare too. I am trying to book my exam. It is sending me round and round in circles back to the beginning.

Well I'm not sure asking the examiner a question before the test is particularly difficult.
85 quid is 85 quid I agree.
Ring the examination body and ask for help.

The phone doesn't work either.... there is nobody there. I might just give it up as a bad job. That is an expensive badge.

Ring the guy you last had a n observerd ride with?
Come on there are loads of people be it iam or rospa booking tests at this time of year it can't be that difficult!

I booked my retest via the website the end of April, got a test date for the 22nd May, examiner phoned me to offer me which date I wanted. This is the fourth time I have booked a test, no issues whatsoever, so not sure why you can't book a test.

This is the link I used, worked fine - https://www.rospa.com/shop/products/advanced-driving-riding-test

I'm the secretary of the South Wales group and agree that phoning them is a nightmare, but I've never had an issue with booking a test via the website, although it isn't straightforward.

This is the direct link for booking a test.

If you need it let me know and I'll PM you an email address for a contact.

I failed mine today on road positioning and further explanation was that effectively I was not using p1-P3 to see ahead/look for the overtake. The main explanation was about an overtake not made: I was doing 45-50 behind an SLK in a national, in the pouring rain with side roads. I was opting for safety.
We go again!

On my first RoSPA test the examiner was clear - if speeding is required to make the overtake/safe, it's not on.

I can't remember the second, but the third was ok.

My IAM was that as long as you're at or below the limit when pulling in, it is fine.

As you know, they are all different and you won't get marked down for asking the question.
