Rossmore Castle/Park Co Monaghan

Dry rot put paid to it, Joe, demolished after 2nd World war. (ex Wickipedia)

I remember climbing the remains of the castle as a child, and not being able to get down off it!
The footprint of the castle still exists within an excellent forest park, threemilehouse road out of monaghan.

Joe, The 4th Lord Rossmore (nicknamed 'Derry') was a buddy of Edward Prince of Wales and those boys did some wild raking and drinking in their time. He wrote a book about some of the less scandalous/libellous/treasonable things they got up to called 'Things I Can Tell', in e-book form here, if you've time to read it. The family name is Westenra and the singer Hayley Westenra is a direct descendant I believe.

I used to fish the loughs in the estate for pike and there were some monsters in there. Beside one of the loughs I found the family mausoleum which was very interesting, almost a genealogy in stone. There are architectural details about the house in 'Burke's Guide to Irish Country Houses' which should be available in most public libraries - a great book full of interesting stuff about all of the old houses, many of them burnt in the Twenties Troubles, many still standing/lived in but the pix in the book serve as a reminder of their life and times.

Nice shots of some of the old houses in http://www.abandonedireland.com/
We lost a lot when sweeping out the past in the 1920's but I guess many of them would have ultimately been abandoned dut to the running expenses.

I suppose that's why the hotel in Monaghan came to be called the Westenra................

Any of you guys remember the day we all met up there for dinner................
Think Officer Dibbles organised it.....................

Here's a pic from the event....don't ask me what was goin on in this wee corner.........:augie:augie
