rough engine idle

went for a spin yesterday all started fine got about 20 miles under my belt when the engine started to get lumpy and erratic with a strange noise coming from allternator area managed to limp home just! used best part of a full tank of fuel in around 120 miles.normaly get about 200
telephoned bmw assist as the bike is a 1200 gs 09 with 18000 on clock it's still under warranty they sent out their mechanic he did not have the diagnostics to test at home and arranged to recover bike to dealer in cardiff has any body had this ,problem what a day .
