So, I'm heading to Tipp from Istanbul next week and I was wondering if there are any gems of advice you lot can give regarding riding through Italy and France.

I'll be arriving in Ancona at 10:30am on the 12th and heading to Le Havre to catch an 11pm ferry to Portsmouth. I was intending to camp somewhere on the Italian / French border.

1. Can anyone give me an idea of toll charges in both Italy and France?
2. Bearing in mind that I'll only have one overnight stop would I have enough time to get from Ancona to Le Havre avoiding motorways?
3. If anyone's done a similar route, can they let me know of good roads / camp sites?
4. Anything else you can think of.

Fank yoo.

Via Michelin will plot the route and work out charges.

We did London to Milan in a day (all motorway) so two days for your journey would be fine.... reserve three if you want to avoid motorways though.

As to the alternative routes. Easy. Get a decent map :D

still.. ita a long way Le Havre to Ancona without motorways... No motorways at all? Then you are looking at 20+ hrs of riding...
Its roughly 1250km from Ancona to Paris.... so a bit longer to Le Havre...

Its 1100km From Istanbul to Athens, 1300 to Patra (where I d assume you took the ferry from) So the question is: Would you be able to do Istanbul to Patra in 2 days on a bike without motorways (well what greeks and turks define as anyway)? Hmm I thought so....

Hi expat, the ride is do able with one stop over but i have always used the peage when in a hurry. I cant remember if there is a toll in italy, if there is it wasnt massive. On road maps of france the distance points on peage are marked in red, on free roads in blue. there are all sorts of good free roads but i personaly dont know a quick route using them. Spain to calais on the otherhand....:)

It looks like motorways then, at least for 50% of the route.

The Greek bit will be from the Turkish border to Igoumenitsa, which is now all motorway which I intended to use for this bit of the trip. It's now some 6.5 hours from end to end, instead of the 10-11 hours it used to take.
