Whilst in Andermatt recently I stopped for a coffee at the lovely Hotel Konige

They were interested in my GS and kindly gave me a list of routes, which I thought I might share, starting and finishing in Andermatt, which they give out to guests.

I didn't do them all but did visit most of the places. Anyone planning travelling in the area looking for inspiration whilst planning where to go might be interested.

Gute Fahrt !

:tarka

Good easy passes, done them many times on my ducati996, and a couple of times on the GS. Always good

Watch out for the St Gottard though - very easy to get onto the road for the tunnel, and that is 17km of sheer hell on a bike.

The Susten is one of my all time favourite rides, and the Nufenen is probably the most remote of them all, but to me it is my favourite of all.

Anyone heading in that direction should enjoy the routes published.

Cheers

We're dropping into Italy from France via Switzerland in 2 weeks, and recommendations what pass to head for and how to make sure we don't get a tunnel instead!:blast

I'll be using a Garmin Zumo if the matters :)

Here is my ride report, which might interest you then

The only "problem" with my Zumo is she likes to take me onto motorways. The only tunnel I think you really need to worry about is the St Gottards, with tailbacks, I was told of up yo 30 kms !!

Read your trip report :thumb2

We are heading for Italy so will clip Switzerland, preferably not going further east than Andermatt. Authough I'd love to do lots of the passes, can you recomend any that will take us down from the east side of lake Genever? I'm thinking to head on non-autoroutes to Sion then drop out south on the E62, looks good but it might be a crap route!!!

There may be better qualified people who can help. There are one or two based in Switzerland for example.

I took the N9 round lake Geneve. Coming in from Besancon and through Lausanne. I found the route pleasant enough but tiring. Not a hairpin or mountain pass in sight I am afraid.

I cannot comment on the route down on the E62 into Italy. Looking at the michelin it is marked as a scenic route and looks quite promising espeically as you go over the Simplon.

I found Switzerland such a beautiful place I am sure you will enjoy the ride even if you don't hit the passes further east

Have just done Italy via Switzerland in the car.

If you can, the St Gottard pass (rather than the tunnel) and Lake Lucerne come highly recommended. I'll never forget the descent into Lucerne. Stunning.:bow

The same main roads lead up to the pass as to the tunnel so do what the locals do and turn off onto smaller roads way before the tunnel and enjoy the view. One of my great drives.:thumb

Cheers for all the tips, I'm using 'OnRoute' and Mapsource to get a route planned, just an A-B as we're wild camping along the way so no idea where we will be. :roll

Sorry but just seen this thread. (been riding the passes):bow

I live in the near Interlaken if anybody needs any help or information please just ask.:type

Ride safe over here....:thumb2

Hi AndrewD,

Not sure if you will see this in time but,,

By law you cannot wild camp over here. but i have seen poeple do this. You could have a look at the Grimselpass or the Sustenpass. Or there are camp sites at Innertkirchen or Nessental both near Meiringen heading towards the passes.

We are going up to the black forest Monday for a week or we could have meet up.

Forcast is good for the start of the week, possable a few rain showers.

Ride safe.

Mike
