I'm taking the GS on a road trip to Italy in a couple of weeks (accompanied by a couple of jap bike hooligans)

Obviously, the GS will shine through and demolish allcomers through the Alpine twisties, but to be honest, I'm not too sure what route to suggest...

So, anyone got any favourite routes through the alps they'd like to share ?

Thanks,

I cannot send e-mail to you so here is my suggestion.

Its a long one but coming from the UK, if you want to grind the bikes to dust, do the following:

From MACON in France go to BOURG EN BRESSE on the N79.
Proceede on N504 to CHAMBERY.
N90 to ALBERTVILLE
N90 to MOUTIERS
N90 to BOURG ST. MAURICE
Take right the D902 and do the "COL DE L'ISERAN" (2760 meters)
Take left the N6 at LANSLEBOURG MONT CENIS and do the "COL DU MONT CENIS" (2084 meters)
You will enter Italy and follow the S25 to SUSA. Proceede to TURIN and take the S29 to ALBA and proceede to CARCARE (SAVONA).
From here do as you like to reach CHIAVARI (after GENOVA towards LA SPEZIA).
Once in CHIAVARI, take the S586 to REZZOAGLIO -> MARSAGLIA -> BOBBIO -> PIACENZA (The VAL D'AVETO is spectacular. Hemmingway wrote in one of his books that it was the most beatiful valley in the world).
From PIACENZA take the A1 to PARMA exit into the A15 towards LA SPEZIA. Exit in FORNOVO VAL DI TARO and take the S62. Do the "PASSO DELLA CISA" (1041 meters). When you reach AULLA take the Highway to whereever you want to go in Tuscany.

In Tuscany let me know if you need some infos, there are very nice roads.
I live in Florence from MON to FRi and around BOBBIO (PIACENZA) from FRI to SUN. On SUN I usually go back to Florence with my bike. If you are around BOBBIO on a Weekend call me (send me a e-mail) and we can organise something and do the road to Tuscany together with some friends.

Bye for now,

aargh, too late.

Thanks for the route; I'll have to do it next year as I got back from Bologna last week :)

Took a different route, perhaps not so interesting through France, but excellent through Switzerland (Simplon pass on way to Italy, Furka pass/Grimsel pass/Brunig pass on way back) and Italy - the A1 between Bologna and Florence is fantastic, but the SS65 that runs parallel with it is even better.

The bikes were truly ground into dust.

Cheers,
