router problem

hope someone my be able to help.i have a netgear dg834 router with 2 pc,s conected (not wireless) been working fine on internet for a year but now keeps droping the connection green internet light on router goes orange and flashes after a while sometimes hours sometimes mins it reconects . sometimes i reboot and it works and somtimes nothing.then just starts conecting again. i have norton and have run ad-aware and spybot they both found stuff but not helped problem. could it be my telephone line as i am in rural location 3+miles from exchange and line is sometimes very crackley when on the phone. dont know what to try next any ideas before it crashes completly sorry for spelling

It does sound as if it's likely to be a line problem.

Have you tried plugging into the BT master socket ? (that's the bit under the lower half of the faceplate) and is your microfilter ok ?

no not tryed that but will do. do i need to unscrew the half cover and remove it and plug in underneath as im all ready pluged in to the master box . what will this prove if it is ok?

Do you have another ADSL modem handy? See if you can replicate the fault which will rule out a router problem.

I have an ADSL/router on my home network. I also have the original "Thomson Frog" ADSL modem supplied by my ISP which I can use to quickly identify if the problem is mine or on the BT line.

At my last address I used this method to convince the BT droid that they had a problem on their line. The house was in a village, the last one on a spur and the engineer found the fault 3 poles from my house where a branch had stretched the wire in a junction box.

Yes However, this will only identify whether your internal phone wiring may be at fault rather than the outside line.

Using a BB modem may work since many of them aren't so 'picky' about the noise on the phoneline, and as Wessie says, it's useful to convince the 'droids' there is a line problem.
