I am with BT for internet and no probs, lately the router has required re-setting for what reason? all ok again after wards but is a nucence. Do I own it or is it the property of BT, if I phone up I get India so thought I'd ask the brains trust.

With BT it is yours and if you want them to replace the home hub it will cost you. Of course you could play hardball and tell them to replace it or you will leave. Might work but might not. Or go to pc world/Amazon and get a new one that will likely be better anyway. Make sure you get the right one if you have BT fibre.

Haven't used the last two generations of BT hub due to it being shite

I use TP-Link equipment myself and find it to be great and simple to use for someone who is self taught in computers

I have a router of theirs (going on 5 years) and two power line adaptors and have never had any issues so maybe you could try TP-Link for a change..

I fecked up and bought a Netgear router and discovered it wasn't a modem.
Still needed the modem.
Should have bought a modem-router.

Ok so it would appear that the router supplied by your internet provider is built down to standard. My provider, sky has given me reasonable service and I have no complaints. But from what I read things can be improved by getting a quality router.
We mostly use Apple gear at home but not exclusively.
Do people think getting a Airport express router would be worth while ? I would have considered a time capsule but I back up to a separate hard drive so that would be a waste.
Your comments are welcomed.

just get a half decent modem router, tp link linksys netgear any of these will be fine.

Apple do not make a modem.

All airport base stations are routers only.

I use older airport extreme 5th gen (cheap off ebay) and powerline with a cable modem provided by supplier.

Latest AE and time capsule has 802.11ac that gives more distance but at a premium price over TP Link etc.

I have an AirPort Extreme and got rid of BT router completely and it works much better and doesn't throw Apple devices off the wifi all the time.

I only wanted to change for port forwarding, the supplied modem is impossible to set up PF.
