Right then,

Going to My Brothers in Basel Switzeralnd for a few days before embarking on 9 days in and around the alps.

Going to go over the passes into Austria etc.. but whats the best way into Slovenia, A friend told me about an old gravel road over the mountains from Austria into Slovenia.

From Slovenia I might go upto Prague then Back home across Germany, or alternatively back through the Austrian Tyrol and up through the Black Forest and up the Mosel before heading home :thumb depends on time

Trouble is My mate has not been on it for years AND he cannot remember where it was exactly other than " in the top left hand corner " How the hell he ever made to some of the places he did I will never know :D:eek:

Has anyone done it or can point me in the direction of some nice long gravel roads in the area.

Will be getting a Michelin map anyway but if anyone has any known gravel type routes then I am all ears

Chris

by eck that was quick,

Thanks I reckon the route I have chosen so far is the one from VIllach over the mountains into Slovenia

That second site is awesome, free downloadable maps :thumb

Thanks very much helps greatly as my Garmin packs in at the Austrain Border

Chris

We entered Slovenia from the top right-hand corner of Italy (Tarvisio), on a narrow 'interesting' mountain road which I think is joined by the road from Villach at one point.

While it was tarmaced, it was fairly challenging - you had to keep your wits about you or you'd be off down the side of a mountain! No barriers here....

Not a very busy road, but if someone was coming towards you there wasn't a lot of space. Enjoyed it though!

Pick any of the little white roads on the map.

Mostly gravel...................this was a diversion of 4 miles off the Tarmac route:eek:

Cheers Johnny, was hoping that was the case but you never can tell until you get there.

Last gravel road I was on last 8 hours and about 180 miles in the Arctic :D:eek::thumb

Hoping that the Little roads in Slovenia are similar.

According to mapsource there are loads of gravel roads in Austria but not sure if you can ride any - will see when i get there i reckon.

Cheers Chris

Many of the small roads alternate from gravel to tarmac and back to gravel every 3-4 miles and most of these roads were built by Russian POW's
