Hi I have a 2007 rt 1200 which came with the 49 lt top case .Shortly after I got the bike I noticed that the case rattled a bit when I went over bumps in the road.I checked out the locking mechanism and found it was not engaging completely with the base plate.Ok so thats a long winded way of saying that the locking system does not work and I am wondering if anyone has dismantled the base of the box and fixed it with any success. As these are an awful price I would like to fix it if possible so any advice would be helpfull. Thanks

You might want to check first (in case you haven't) that the rubber bumpers on the front edge where the case mounts to the rack are still there. If one or both is missing the case will rock on the mounting.

Right so far.

True, but in my case they had worn and even thought they were there, the top box bounced around like a prick in a bucket.
I superglued additional thicker bumpers to the top of the existing ones, and Bob's your Auntie.

There are a whole load of bumpers and stops for these topboxes, the main ones being 'Z' shaped which fit on the front claws. Apparently they are prone to coming off so i guess some people don't realise that the boxes are not "all like that sir". The bumpers are only a couple of quid from the dealer but take ages to arrive if not in stock.
As for dismantling the box, it isn't too technical - just lots of bits and bobs to get back in the right place!! It can take a fair bit of doing as the lock and handle mechanism has to be taken apart etc. It seems like a fairly robust mechanism and, i would suggest, unlikely to give you trouble so would definitely try the bumper stops first, homemade or dealer.

I wouldn't bother dismantling anything at first. My guess is it's just the rubber bungs. Even if they are still there they'll be ready for replacement. They don't cost much, only 3 or 4 pounds for a pair, even from a BMW dealer.

re top box

Thanks for all the replies.Unfortunately I was not clear enough describing my problem. The issue is to do with the locking mechanism. The locking hooks which engage with the base plate do not stay in the locked position when the locking lever is fully pressed down which caused the top box to work it's way loose enough to fall off the bike.I was in touch with local dealer who told me that all they could do was sell me a new lid or lock barrell and anything else under the plastic was a mystery to them . What I am hoping for is a picture (if someone had one ) of the innards to see what is involved in the dismantling and maybe someone else will have had the same problem and may know where to source the parts required. Thanks again

The top box on my RT stopped closing. Had it fixed at Alan Jefferies... cant remember how much.... the innards of these boxes are very complex. IMO dont try to fix it youself.

re top box

Hi Thanks for that .Its too heavy to send anywhere so I need to find out if its possible to do it myself otherwise it will become a large paper weight. If anyone has opened one up or has a picture of the internal bits I would like to hear from them.

re top box

Thank you for the picture.Ill have a go a dismantling the box and see if there is anything fixable inside. It seems a shame that an item this expensive and complex does not have available parts. Thanks again

I had a similar problem with a pannier. The plastic tabs just didn't extend far enough - so it jumped about all over the place.
Ended up having to get a new "back section" for it.
