RTC. Dublin. Kimmage rd. this a.m.

Update as of this morning

He has had the sedation reduced but not completely. He has a chest infection and they have to keep the oxygen going into the lungs. If they take him off the sedation completely he will find the tube a nuisance and will try to take it out of his mouth. Yesterday he opened his eyes for a few seconds. He is also coughing which is a good sign for the infection.
Frances

Good Signs

Fingers crossed

I dont know the bloke but I hope he makes a full recovery.I will keep him in my prayers.

Update as of this evening

Hi Jay
Up to now there was nothing to report as there was no change in him.

We were waiting all week for the op and it kept getting postphoned as he was last on the list.
If an emergency came in it was done instead of him.

He was last on the list as he had MRSA. James wont take him in on account of this,

He had the trachy op today and he has a tube in his neck instead of in the mouth.

He is off the sedation now so it is wait and see.

Frances

Thinkin of ye Pat! Cummon Sort it out!

Hopefully and Upbeat Update

They have moved him back to James which is much nearer to us. He is off the critical list and all he needs now is nursing care. No body can say at this stage how bad the brain injury is.
Frances

And Chris Butler from Naas Ireland, sent this today

I've been in to see Pat today and I have tried to word this a thousand times since leaving and I am still lost for words. Can't be more honest than that.
Pat's lovely daughter was there, she is so up beat and positive and that was so nice to see. Pat is for all the world asleep, though he moves about a bit now and then and has opened his eyes but has'nt focused just yet. He looks really comfortable, has a great colour to his cheeks and looks as if he could open his eyes and join in the craic at any minute. But not just yet. Real soon hopefully.

On another note the hospital staff shaved off his beard. The nurse there was really nice but I told her he won't be in the least bit impressed with that. He looks like a young lad with it gone Very Happy

Keep Pat in your prayers, any day now!!
Chris

I don't know what the significance is because I'm not a neurosurgeon but His wife's tone seems a lot lighter and more positive.

They have shaved his beard off. When I went in first he was asleep. They rolled him at around 7.30 and it woke him up.

When I went back in I was showing him cards and telling him who they were from.
I also showed him the photo of us all taken at the wedding. He was responding by smiling or moving his eyes. A few times he tried to move his mouth and he was also rolling his head from side to side.

After a while his BP went up as he seems to be getting agitated. They are trying to control the BP with drugs. they also think he may have a headache so they are giving him painkillers.

Just before I left he moved his left ankle and his right finger (probably thinking he had a mouse there)

Frances

Hi
Over the last few days they have been putting him sitting in a chair for a few hours.

He is responding to questions with a nod of the head either yes or know.

He is staying awake for longer hours but he does not know any of us.

He is staring at us but shows no sign of recognition.

It is going to be a long haul.

Frances

......

Things Move Along

Time WILL heal

My sincere thanks for your Positive thoughts People

I have High hopes that my friends spirit will overcome the damage

Jay

It may very well be a long road to full recovery Jay, but at least he is on his way. All the very best to him. :thumb2

I thought I'd update on Pat, The good news is That he's still with us and improving! The bads news he's not quite coherent and is babbling a bit.

Some more Good News is that a long time nurse on the ward has seen quite a few of these types of injury and has been very positive in saying to a friend of mine that he's just fighting his way out of the cloud of drugs from the last 2 months and that it's stimulation and chat that he needs!

My Friend Chris saw him about 10 days ago in ICU with all the tubes and gizmos beeping and bleeping etc and says now that he thought the Bugger could pass on at any time and that after his visit yesterday that he was a 100 times healthier looking just that he was babbling a bit

His Mrs sent me this this morning

He is off the oxygen now and the only tube he has in is the feeding tube. He is trying to pull the trachea out and also the feeding tube. He is talking, but it is not making any sense. He is getting everything confused. He is mixing things up. For example: He spoke about a shop and asked if we had a enough lemons and we should clear the beer glasses and also mentioned Guinness. He said that we would do the debits in this session and investments in the next session. He wanted to know if Alison answered the e mails and how many wrists she had. When she said she had 2 he said that was not enough. He told her to push the shifter.
He said Avril was doing the graphs and filling in the fields.
He still doesnt know he is in hospital but he was asking how the people were in the other rooms. We think he must hear what is going on when he has his eyes closed and gets confused when he opens them.
Frances

Perhaps a transistor radio as stimulation or a portable dvd player?

Positive Update from Fran

Hi
Pat has made some progress.

Yesterday he had some mashed potato and he was able to swallow it. I never thought I would get excited over mashed potato. Today they are trying him with porridge for his breakfast.

We are bringing him for a walk in his chair if we go in early in the morning.

Fingers Crossed World that he continues to get better :aidan :aidan :aidan

Don't think I ever met him but strangely he came to mind yesterday as there had been no update for some time.
He is in my thoughts as are his family; wishes (good or bad) don't count for much but good wishes are all I can offer.
Thanks for the update.

In case you folks are still thinking or pondering what became of Pat I went in to see him last Thursday and was amazed whilst visiting that he claimed to recognise me and he called me by my forum name
I just received this from Frances this afternoon

Hello Jay
I see that you were in with Pat on Thursday. I do not read what is written in the book every time I go in as I am too busy concentrating on him. I bring him for a walk in his chair and we go around the hospital. I point out signs to him and tell him what they say. We do not know if he can read or not. I brought my computer and showed him e mails and he appeared to read them. As you have noticed when he speaks it is all gibberish.
When I have him in the chair I go a certain route and the other day I went a different way and he said 'no its left here'. He is eating a small amount of solid food-mashed potato and mince. On Sunday I was totally ignoring him and talking to the nurse. Next I hear 'Frances' and turn to look at him. This is the first time he has recognised me by my name. He also called 'Alison' the other day.
His left hand is still weak but his right is getting strong. He keeps putting his two fingers to his lips and then he brings them down and makes the actions of flicking ash. A few times he has stubbed out a cigarette. Talk about an automatic action.
We think he dreams a lot but thinks that his dreams are reality when he wakes up.
He gets tired very quickly and then gets very aggitated. When this happens he curses and swears at people.
Even though he can speak he is having trouble with language particularly nouns. He can say set phrases like 'when your ready or lets go' I am not too worried about the speech and now that he is swallowing that is a great improvement. The next step (excuse the pun) is the walking.
The physio is trying to strenghten his trunk muscles so that he can stand up but he keeps listing over to the right.
Frances

Thanks for the update.
i do think of him - every time i go along Kimmage Rd.
it's local to me - and every time i think...

that could've just as easily have been me.

he and his family are in the thoughts of many of us.

Guess what he can do now? He can drink on his own from a beaker. At the moment it is only water or tea. Next it will probably be a 'short'. Trust him to get his priorities right.

Day by day he is making a little progress nothing major or world shattering. What he is doing is only small but at least it is progress. He had an appointment with the surgeon yesterday in Beaumont. He wanted to assess him to see about putting the bone back. He decided against it for at least 6 months when he will see him again. He felt that as he is doing so well that it would be a setback to his rehab.

Thanks for the reminder folks I've been so wrapped up in work and tryin to get my life back on track I missed filling the rest of the world in on pats progress
