Just finished a service on my 1150GSA and managed to lose the rubber grommit that covers the hole for the TDC marker on the right side, I pushed it a little too hard and it disappeared into the bowels of the motor.

Anyone know what the likely consequences of this are? It seems to run fine but can't be a good thing and I don't want to have to strip the engine down to retrieve it. I'm tempted to forget about it carry on riding and hope for the best.

It will have dropped in to the bottom of the ring gear housing, I wouldn't go to the hassle of stripping it, if it did get caught in the ring gear it the rubber bung would be destroyed.

Thanks for that, I feel a little more reassured now. Think I'll use gaffer tape over the hole in future, as I'll probably do it again next time.

Tried the rubber magnet and even put some non stick glue on the end of it, but all to no avail.

I'be never removed one of those things - where is it.

Its located on the right side of the engine above the cylinder and hidden behind the throttle parts. Its proper title is a timing inspection plug. When removed it uncovers a hole / window, rotate the engine and a marker appears in the window to tell you when the engine is at TDC. Bad design as it's to easy to lose the plug as it's incredibly fiddily to access for both removal and replacement.

Oh dear.

What i was hinting at = You have no need whatsoever to remove the plug trying to find TDC when doing a service.

Never mind :augie

Ok you got me:blast , I'm new here you know how was I to know you are the font of all technical knowledge, I am aware of straws in the plug hole ect but if you know an easier way please let me know to save future embarrassment and lost grommits.:o

Suggestion... This makes it really easy for those who do remove the thing, to put it back...
