Any suggestions for an entertaining non-motorway route across France? I need to run in a new GS:bounce1 and have to get to Stuttgart in Germany. Rather than use the obvious motorway routes across Belgium etc. I would like to find a direct route (probably via Strasbourg or near) but know little about rural France. Any suggestions? Anyone been on the "official" BMW run to Garmisch; someone said that was a pleasant route.

Thanks in advance :beerjug:

Quite simple.

I guess you are starting from Calais?

Motorway to Cambrai.

Then National / D road via Hirson, Charleville-Mezieres, Sedan, Montmedy, Metz. This road is fine.

Things get a bit congested now.

Probably then work my way to Strasbourg or Haguenau. Then roughly, Baden Baden or Karlsruhe, Pforzheim to Stuttgart.

Pump Stuttgart into Google maps, it only takes a second and the route becomes reasonably clear.

Don't be tempted to run the bike on a motorway for long distances with a constant throttle - it needs lots of varying throttle, not too harsh, and plenty of over running to hone the rings in. Look here for more running in advice.

Good point.

The route above only has motorway from Calais to Cambrai. Not much to worry about. The rest is N / D roads and plenty of opportunity to run the bike in correctly.

How he gets from Welsh Wales to Dover is a different matter though.
