not for sale or wanted

i have a 04 gsa 1150 32,000 miles twin spark
the bike is fantastic had it about 2 and a bit years had a few little glitches i noticed it wasn't running as sweet as it should be
stating ok but not first press
cutting out sometimes at junctions
popping exhaust on overrun
fuel consumption not fantastic

so decided to purchase a pair of stick coils from motorworks
as the plugs/ valve clearances/air filter/fuel filter all been changed
can't believe how it has transformed the bike
15 mins to fit
fantastic power no popping on over run
fuel consumption back
starts first press and ticks over even when cold
no cutting out
the coils have no burning marks ar any indication they were duff
i think they have deteriated maybe slowly over the last year
anyway if your bike is not pulling like a train try a new coil or coils

So why post in FS&W then? :nenau

(Off to the 850/1100/1150 section with you!)

What did they cost?

Sorry about posting in the wrong forum Mr moderator

The coils were about £62 each inc of the dreaded VAT Motorworks
then there's the postage
I don't get discount from BMW dealers have a ring round
I was offered two from a bike breakers £50 which i wouldn't have bought as they could be more Knac--d more than mine
As i posted no visable marks burning or cracks
Just trying to pass on a tip to fellow GS's

These coils are also fitted to cars
They have similar problems some motor manufacturers are having massive problems with them
I think one problem is they sit into the cylinder heads and run at incredible
temperatures
I was told by a specilist BMW company that on my bike they usually start to break down at 25,000 miles

I also have a 2004 1150 gsa (22k miles) and experienced similar problems and as you bought 2 new coils from motorworks, i manage to do a deal for £105 posted (that was about 3 months ago)

They completely transformed the bike.

I also have a 2004 'twin spark' 1150GSA, now with 22,000 miles on it.

One thing puzzles me when I read about the problems with the coil sticks . . .

"What are the secondary plugs doing ?".

The lower plugs don't have coil sticks (as far as I know) - just a conventional coil under the tank.

Or am I wrong (I have left well alone so far :thumb )

Any thoughts ?

Bob.

coils

some engines have a secondary burn to run a cleaner engine
i'm not sure if the coil under the tank just fires the plug under the cylinder at the same time as the stick coil !! !!! !! !!!
some engines have a wasted spark which fires on the oposite cylinder whilst the exhaust valve is open to burn any unburnt gasses
with my GSA the stick coils were giving either a poor spark or none at all so the plug under the cylinder was doing all the work giving poor performance
anyway not a cheap guess if the coils are ok.

.

All the R series bikes have a wasted spark, most bike engines for the last 20 have had a wasted spark.
Nothing to do with burning unburnt gases, it's all to do with simplicity.

Try doing a search for main cap coils/stick coils, it's a very common problem ( but so easy to check), so common that BMW have changed the material that the new ones are made of, so perhaps it'll cure the problem.

If the R series has a wasted spark for simpicity
with it only having two cylinders why fit another coil seperate to the stick coils also with coventional ht leads
not only does it complicate the ignition system
but it also makes the plugs underneath spark for no reason as you say they are wasted spark and do not ignite unburnt fuel
or does the stick coils spark whilst the exhaust valve is open

The giveaway is in the name of engine - twin spark :blast - The engine is called a twin spark because the "plugs underneth" spark on the compression stroke the same as the main sparks - this is to help burn the fuel on the compression stroke and more efficient running.

Nothing too complicated or a wonderous new 4stroke/2stroke design of engine that fires and powers on every stroke.
