Had a rather depressing conversation with someone from Somerset County Council today.

I called to clarify the position re RUPPs in Somerset.
She informed me that as of May 2nd all RUPPs in Somerset have been downgraded and motorcycles and cars have no legal right over them now.

We had a chat about the likelyhood of anyone actually stopping you riding a small RUPP in the middle of no-where which she aggreed was slim, however my reason for the enquiry was to establish the rights of the Quantock hills as they now have a Police community support officer paid for by the Quantocks wardens employed to patrol the area.

The Quantocks Hills have NO legal rights of way over them now.
She said that as the "Great road" over the top was an important route that the application by the TRF may be looked at quicker. I asked in her opinion how long that may take and she said "a couple of years!"

They currently have over 200 applications by the TRF to upgrade these routes in Somerset to BOATs and one can only imagine how long they are going to take to get these done.

How sad it is that for what ever reason, what must be hundreds of thousands of pounds of public money is being spent buggering about with this.

I for one have no intention of stopping riding these RUPPs in Somerset and when out on the Quantocks will take a small pair of binoculars for looking ahead for wardens.

Can anyone one with any greater knowledge on these matters give any advise on what defence (if we have any) if ever stopped and challenged.

......and cos of who your employers are ? - does it mean you dare not venture up the hills ??

Er no I don't think so.
Just got to keep an eye out (and ride abit quicker) whilst up on the Quantocks.

I would be very carefull on the Quantocks trippy. I know of one person who has been given a warning by the police. If he's caught again he was told they would take his TD5 Discovery and crush it!
A lot of people are still using the more remote Exmoor lanes as there is less chance of getting caught.
Also apparently if anyone does take your number you just deny ever being there as that is not enough evidence. Bastards :(

Looks like it's back to having a very dirty number plate again then.
1984 :(

Yeah I must admit I'm beginning to think it maybe better to steer clear of the Quantocks now :(

Still there's plenty of stuff in remote areas around here that should be ok ;)

Think the next we go out on the hills we will have to be alot more vigilant, will take some binos with me and check from some of the hill tops

After all there cant be many places to hide a nissan terrano with a blue and yellow battenburg pattern down both sides

Not too bad, it took about 1 1/4 hrs to get to the Plain the other day. I see there's alot south west of Salisbury too.

I was actually thinking more of North Wiltshire - Swindon, Avebury, Marlborough etc - there are a load of good GS lanes - I have quite a few more to explore before I'll try and arrange a proper GS route/day out.

Yeah I'd be up for that sometime. B*stard trying to get time off at work at the mo.

Trippy,
Is the trip you previously posted still on this Friday? I've lost the thread - or is it the plot?
