Hi Just filled in visa application as a Auto -tourisim but no details for the bike/ vehicle etc. Is this done at the boarder? We are planning to travel from Helsinki to St Petersburgh by road. Will we have any problems with accomodation in St Petersburgh and are the bikes Safe ? We are planning to return via Tallin, would this be a problem? Any other tips please. route planned Ferry to Denmark, ride to Stockholm, Ferry to Helsinki, Ride to St Petersburgh. Ride to Tallin. Ferry Tallin to Rostock.

The details for your bike will be taken at the border.

Expect delays and little help so be patient and don't show any frustration (even though you'll be feeling it).

Be very wary of the police in western Russia. Stick to speed limits and don't cross solid white lines.:blast

I would lock the bikes at night in larger towns.
If you ever get stuck for accomodation, ask and keep asking despite being answered with a stern, 'niet'!......oh and Russian truckers will want to drink vodka with you then shag you:D

Finland into Russia

I rode from Stavanger in Norway up to the Arctic Circle and back through Finland and made the crossing from Finland into Russia at a place called Imatra and then onto St Petersburg and out through into Estonia and crossed at Narva. Border crossing was fairly long winded but as long as you do what you are told everything is ok. Shocking roads but they are guaranteed to get the adrenalin pumping. You need to keep your wits about you on the run into St Petersburg (crazy Russian truck drivers) and the traffic in the city is horrendous. All exciting stuff. We stayed in a hostel just 50 yards off Nevsky Prospekt, I'll see if I can find the details. They had a heavily gated compound behind steel doors to store the bikes. According to the hostel manager if we didn't put the bikes in there they would be gone so be careful. If you want any more specific info then drop me a line.
Cheers
Mike

As long as you stick to the speed limits and as Tim says don't cross white lines and stop at stop signs you should be ok. I got caught on the Russian side of the border on the road from St. Petersburg to Talinn. Stop sign, nobody there, carried on until I was stopped at a booth. Where's your ticket? What ticket? Go back and get ticket. Went back. You should have waited. Traffic violation. Written in 20 languages on a card! Fine 20euros. Ticket available from off the road filling station!!! Like a raffle ticket. Moral of the story. Stop and wait.

At filling stations usually you pay your money and then get your petrol.

Enjoy St. Petersburg, absolutely fantastic.:thumb

Don't mind Tim he was just unlucky with his trucker:augie
