Can you do anything to restore header pipes with brown surface rust on the inner surfaces or do I need to replace? If so do you think only new is the option or do you think there are any used ones out there

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks,

GHW

They're stainless steel so WD40 with wet and dry paper plus a bit of elbow grease. :thumb

Personally I would suggest engine oil on a nylon scourer - less likely to spoil the finish, followed by autosol polishing paste and a liberal amount of elbow grease. Mine came up a treat after that.

Oh yeah - don't forget to put the scourer back in the kitchen sink dish afterwards !:D

I'd try a polishing mop and fine (ie not very abrasive) polish first. The sort you can get from HG etc and fits onto an electric drill.

BTW how old is the bike? And / or have the headers gone blue near the exhaust valve or just a shitty brown?

wonder wheels ally wheel cleaner first, wash off with water then 800grit wet'n'dry using water with abit of washing up liquid in as lube then 1000 grit same again then 1200 grit same again then autosol.after all this work you will be able to use just the wonder wheels cleaner after. bit of work for a lot of gain :beerjug:

Stainless is very hard, don't be afraid of roughing it up a bit.
We use emery cloth, don't know what grade but we clean paint off copper pipe with it.
Then to finish it off we normally use the buffer/polishing wheel.
It will go a lovely light colour but not for long as it will go golden from the heat from the engine pretty soon.

I cheated and took my header pipes to a local metal polisher, who for a fiver got them gleaming! Well worth it. Then use Wonder wheels or similar to keep them like that! :thumb
