Does anybody out there have a problem with a strange rythmic vibration on R1150GS Adventure in 4th gear between 3 and 4 thousand RPM (the bike is 6 weeks old with 1500 miles up) - the vibration is different to normal engine vibration.

It different to the 'normal' surging, it's only in 4th and between 3 & 4 thousand RPM and it's a vibration rather than a surge

Sounds like the throttle bodies might be out of sync, that or the valves.

But would it not effect all gears not just 4th if it was either of these, or am I missing some thing here ?

Ah, yes, missed that... If it's gear related, well, has to be the transmission then (no shit, Sherlock!)

Would have to be the gearbox too, I s'pose, the shaft would depend on the speed rather than the gear... Sounds like a warranty issue in this case!

it's the engine asking you to use more revs

OK, so you're saying don't worry about it, it's normal, and ride through it and ring the nad's off it? Cheers men, I feel a bit better now :)

Had a similar sort of thing on my R1100S certain gear, certain revs. Something to do with the harmonics in the engine-gearbox. Dont worry about it..."They all do that sir....."
The Clown:D :D

Yep, I agree with the others, mine does that too. Don't notice it that much now as I seem to just ride throught it.

Rhythmic vibration

If your adventure has knobby tyres on it, it could be the tyres.

After a similar distance travelled on mine, the same rhythmic vibration appeared.

Each tyre has it's own wavelength rhythm and as the diameters are different, a periodic wave patern is experienced where the two wave patterns complement each other (Constructive wave interference) instead of cancelling each other out.

When you change your tyre pressure, or change the tyres, the rhythm changes or goes away.

Ride on!

It sounds like fun!;)
Good vibrations, like in The Beach boys song?
:D May I borrow it?

:) Liv.

I'm having the same vibrations as mentioned on my 2 weeks old r1150gs adventure.

Also between 3000 and 4000 rpm in 4th gear

I'll just live with it.

Thanks men, Allan your explanation makes a lot of sense, cheers.
Duch, is your GSA fitted with T66's? just wandering if it's specific to these tyres... mine is just 5 weeks old.

T66...

Mine is fitted with these tyres, and while i do like them for they seem to be lasting a long time....
A:- they are shite in the wet.
B:- At slow speeds the profile of the tread reminds me of my old grifter....... (Come on lads you know what i am on about!!!....LOL)
Mark ;)

Mine (2001 GS) had a similar issue, mostly when accelerating in that range. It seemed to occur in no other gear. It either eventually went away or I got used to it, not sure.

i've never noticed this before untill i had the output seal from the gearbox replaced yesterday and now in 4th @ 3500rpm i am noticing this wierd hunting like sensation. is that a coincedence or what ?

Rythmic....wan.....vibration!

4th gear, 2,800 rpm - 3200ish rpm rythmic vibration = surging.

If it was g/box related there would be other signs, syptoms.

4th gear is magnifying the surging as it can have more effect through the drive shaft over a more constant period...you tend to be in 4th longer than the other lower gears. Example accelerate well in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, then snick (or kick in some cases) into 4th and cruise ......'was at'.....vibration....thinks ....can't be tyres else it'd do it in any gear (Adventure nobblies tend to vibrate at lower speeds....they have lower gearing as well so effects are at different engine rpms).....can't be bent shafts in the box cause ther'd be other noises....oval wheel...naah.. too easy to check...oval tyre..naah... too easy to check......oval drive shaft....naah it'd do it in any gear....any way the engines quieter in 4th so I can concentrate more on whats going wrong next!

Surging is the cause and surging is the cause of alot of other transmission related problems....like jumping out of gear occasionally....oil seal leaks due to constant choppiness in the transmission line causing shaft wobble in the seal housings....you work it out and try and put it into words.

Once again its surging. Do what the others suggest and get your bodies balanced etc.:o
