There's a thread in gspot about this where Sherpa measures the noise level. At 4000 rpms, a stock GS produces 88 decibels. With the muffler removed it produces 90 decibels. That's marginally louder. You can notice it, but it isn't much of a difference. I've been running without a muffler for a year now and people still comment on how quiet my bike is.

No real effect on mileage or performance that I can detect -- all the back-pressure is supplied by the catalytic converter.

They also suggest that keeping the stainless/chrome bit acts as a heat sheild for your boot so worth keeping although doesn't look too good.

The going price for the little bit of stainless tube is $5 (£2.50), put me down for one at this price please.
