I have an 05 1200 GS out of warranty but have taken out an extra yrs warranty with BMW. Noticed the usual front cover corrosion and I always clean and spray to keep clean. Phoned up BMW (South London Motorcycles) and basically they stated that BMW will not do any more warranty for the above due to the number of people putting in for warranty work, and not looking after their bikes! So looks like easier to do it yourself, get the cover off and paint etc. Not being of a great mechanical nature, can I do this myself or I might ask the guy who services my bike. All advice welcomed.

Good timing

I'm in the same boat, but mines an 06GSA. I don't keep it clean at all, so I'm not surprised it's rusted up, but I'd appreciate an idea of how easy it'll be to fix up.

Will just do a quick search in case there's a good link.

Do you need to remove the front wheel to do it properly?

No. But don't forget to mask everything else if you are using a spray gun. If you are careful, you can get a perfectly good finish with hand painted Hammerite. Make it easier to do by removing the plastic cover first, of course. (This is only a ten minute job). The finished work will be as good as new.:)

i would tell them to piss off..... if there are loads of people puting in for warranty work of this item then there is a reason why they are putting in for warranty - because BMW dont paint the parts after it is machined and leave exposed aluminium to the elements - its not your fault! Try a differnt dealer or cotact bmw direct and moan a bit - will make u feel better if anything to vent a little :thumb

IIRC the BM extended warranty specifically excludes corrosion problems :(

I think that`s correct. I took the extended warranty out on mine and my dealer changed the front cover during the original 2 year period because they said BuMW would not do it afterwards.

Whip it off and paint it which will do the job nicely.:thumb

I think this level of corrosion is totally unacceptable!

If the extended warranty doesn't cover corrosion...then it should!!........surely this is almost an admittion from BMW that corrosion is expected, and a high risk??

I don't really think this is solely a BMW problem.........I think most modern bikes will disintergrate quickly if used through British winters....especially with this snowy and salty one we've just had!

Unfortunately bikes aren't made to withstand them as modern cars are....and I'm guessing most GS owners are more likely to be riding all year on their bikes, than say, your average R1, Fireblade, or sports bike rider??......and so they will encounter more salt etc, and so be more prone to corrosion?

It is one of those situations where, if you accept it as it is, it will always remain the same.....but if the buyers and owners don't, then the factories will be forced to improve the build quality? :nenau

In th 70's Datsun entered the UK car market with affordable cars that were selling well.........unfortunately the Japanese factory had totally underestimated what rain, road salt, and the generaly foul climate of the average European winter would do to the bodywork and chassis of their cars....and as a result they rusted away!!

Since then there has been great advancement in corrosion protection on all cars, with impressive warranties being given on many makes and models..........surely even though a motorbike engine and parts are more open to the elements, we could expect at least a adequate level of protection? :nenau

I personally would be well p'd off if after 3 years I was attacking my 'new' 3 year old car with a wire brush, flap wheel and hammerite!.....why should we accept it on our BMW bikes?? :nenau

Good points Gents, I might just fire off a letter to BMW anyway and have a moan. If it comes to it I'd rather keep the bike in good condition and have been very careful with it during this winter, cleaning it, spraying with FS365 and wd40. I have spent a few quid in my time P/X and buying new bikes, but want to keep this for a good few years more, so I need to keep it in good nick :)

DIY

I too have a 05 GS. Had the corrosion issue just like you. There's been loads of posts as to how and why it happens but I reckon it's down to standard BMW cheapskate cost cutting and poor design (when I took the cover off mine the sound dampening wad was saturated). I am not at all a 'diy fixer' but sorting it out myself, apart from being very easy, was far preferable to yet another protracted conversation with a company that is clearly living off past reputation for both quality and customer service.
Despite all the problems that come with this bike still a hard push to find a better one - but when one does come along BMW may rue the day they took their customers for granted.
